DL650AK9, Rear axle wrench: What do you carry?

I've been a proud owner and rider of the Wee Strom for a few months now. My question is what wrenches are people carrying for the rear axle nuts (this bike has the locking nut and is not castellated. As it came from the last servicing, when I went to tweak the chain adjustment, I had to use a breaker bar to loosen the nut. To date I hadn't planned on carrying a breaker bar with me and don't feel that the OEM 8" long wrenches would work very well without an extension for each one. I do need to check that the torque is Grey Wolf's recommended ~60 ft-lb and not the manual recommended 72 ft-lb.

Is anyone using the Motion-Pro tire-spoon axle wrenches? How long are they? The fact that they do not look offset makes sense to me. Particularly on the axle head with the thin head, I find that if you are not careful, my Craftsmen socket seems to slide off (I may have to try and machine off the slight bevel on the end of the socket).

Any other recommendations?

I've used the one in the stock tool kit a couple times while on the road. They seem to work just fine. You only need the extension on the nut side of things. If you need more leverage try using your foot to break things loose.

Your comment about sockets slipping off the axle end make me think you are trying to tighten things from that side. If you are you will have major issues as the short hex will not work well for any wrench at 60 ft-lb it's just too shallow. You should only need a wrench on it to keep it from rotating while the fuji nut until it starts tightening everything up. Once you get about 25% of the torque value the axle tends to have enough friction to stay in position. Are you using anti-seize on the threads?

I've got one made of titanium for the 27mm nut on my bike. I think I got it from Aerostich. It's prolly about 10 inches long. There's another one sold as a KLR axle wrench. It's cut from flat bar stock and has 22mm on one end and 24mm on the other.

I carry a 22mm combination and a 27mm combination in my tool tube. I had to cut the open end off the 27mm so it would fit in the tube. I marked the nut & nut plate with a Sharpie to get it close to torque if I'm not home.

I live in my own little world, but it's OK, they know me here.

When I got home today, I took off the nut and put some anti-seize on the axle bolt threads. The torque on the dry threads was around 80 ft-lb . I tightened it to 60 ft-lb. and can now remove it using the OEM 22 wrench and a 3/8 ratchet with a 24mm socket that I carry in my toolkit. Life is good again
