Neck Pain After Ride...

Hi Everyone,

Last Saturday I went on a 370 mile ride through San Francisco, Santa Cruz, and back to Sac. Was great while the weather was cool in the morning but was hellishly hot on the way home, in the mid to upper 90's!!

But anyway, after I got home and got off my bike I noticed that the base of my neck hurt. Especially when turning my head from side to side. Some I'm wondering why? My neck used to hurt after riding my '89 sport bike but the Strom is an upright riding position.

Weird. Does anyone else get neck pain after a long ride, say 300 to 400 miles in a day? Just wondering if it's just me or if that is common?

I take 1-2 Aleve/asprin/whatever before I head out..
I usually feel that a side wind or gripping the bars too hard is what brings on the sore neck, and I've done several 750+ mile days...

So, you need to continue riding 3-400 mile days until you figure out what's the problem. Then ride more to verify that it was solved.. :lol:

Also, you're using muscles that don't normally get used..

Have you changed anything recently?

I noticed after I installed my Gen-Mar up-and-backs that I have a slight pain between my shoulder blades on long rides. It doesn't make much sense to me but I'm going to take them off for a while and see if it changes. I think I'll try that Master Yoda thing and see how that goes.

That's probably it, I'm just not used to riding that far in a day. I was battling a fierce crosswind on one stretch of 680 between Benicia and Fairfield. It's always windy as hell through there, blowing West to East.

I had to angle into the wind a little to keep from being blown off the road. It was actually kinda fun.... I'd let the wind drift me to the right then angle back into it, and did it over and over for a while. Yeah, I was pretty bored at that point on my way home.

So that plus the wind buffeting I'm getting, over that period of time probably tweaked my neck a little.... That reminds me, I'm going to go raise my windsheild (Cee Bailey) one notch higher.

No, nothing. Well I add some ProTaper ATV High bars, but I don't think that's it.

2 things I did to fix my neck pain, which was apparant after only 60 or so miles, especially after a long week of riding my bike into work:
1. Raised the windshield to reduce buffeting / wind blast
2. Bought a taller, straighter handlebar, which really helped (me) -- I bought & installed the MSR ATV High bar.

I get neck pain after long rides, but I have a lingering neck problem from an old football injury, so my situation might be different from yours. I put ice on it for about half an hour ASAP after the ride, preferable sitting back in my recliner. Works like a charm.

I also stretch my neck in the showe every morning (the warmth helps loosen it up), and work out all the kinks and crackles.

It can be weak neck muscles that cause it , but quite often it is over concentration and eye strain that causes it .
Try rotating your eyes a bit when you get a chance ,
Move you head about left to right ,forward to back with your helment on before you ride and at any stop you have .
Vibration from handle bars and over strecthing can cause sholder stiffness etc .
Having breaks , and loosening up is important ,so allow for it in a trip.

Get regular good massages to keep you at your best .
