How Long Should the Stock Battery Last?

Well, I got up this morning and ready to leave the house by 5:05 AM. I pushed the 'Strom out of the garage, turned the key on, waited for the "dual sweep" to happen and the fuel pump to start, hit the starter button and everything went dark! Turned off the key and started all over again - once again, total darkness.

This is on a bike I picked up from the dealer on June 13th. I suppose the battry has a bad cell in it. I'm going out right after I get home and check it out. I have lots of bikes, so I'll move a battery over from one of those to check it.

Guess I'll be calling my dealer in the morning.

A bummer!

I still have the original battery in my K4, and its still good. Had the bike almost 2 years without a problem.

Do you lock the steering when you park the bike overnight? If so, make sure you didn't have the switch in the "P" position. It will make the parking lights stay on, even with the key removed.

Not sure about my Wee Strom or SV650 yet. I have only owned these bikes 2 years or less. I will say my 2000 VS1400 Intruder was 6 years old with 28,000 miles. It was still going strong with the original stock Suzuki maintenace free batter, when the bike was sold.
I will feel really cheated if I don't get at least 5 years on my SV650 and DL650 batteries.

There is a good chance that there is nothing wrong with the battery.
50/50 chance that you turned the key too far and left the rear
tail light on.
Sealed batteries will last a few years.
The one on my GS500 lasted only 1 1/2 years and that bike never sat for more than a week, even in the winter. That was the type that you had to add water.
Got myself a Battery Tender since I have 3 bikes. I keep swapping it around between the bikes if I don't use them at least once every week or so.

I had a brand new battery do that a couple of years ago. It was replaced under warranty and no further problems ever surfaced.

I am facing similar problems to yours, and at present, the suspicion is a bad alternator.

I know about the "Park" position. Was educated earlier on when I left my KLR in "Park" one day. I always check the tail light before leaving the bike. Besides, it was in my garage over night and I don't put it in the "Park" position.

Got home last night and immediately went into the garage to see if I could find out what was wrong.

Measured the battery with my DVM - 13.2 volts. I said to myself, "Self, let's hit the starter and see if the battery drops way below this reading." You can imagine my chagrin when the battery voltage stayed pretty close to 13.2 volts, but the bike roared to life!

Is there something in the electrical system that I need to check.

I hate intermittent problems!

No, I don't want to take it to the dealer. I ride my bike everyday. It is my commuting vehicle. Can't handle a couple of weeks of downtime.

Just a thought, but have you checked the battery terminals for tightness?

Sure did! They were nice and tight. I had even put some terminal dressing on them when I first got the bike. No corrosion!

It has started fine today.

My wife says the bike just needed a rest!

I changed the oil again this evening - bike now has 3500 miles on it. Not too bad for buying it in mid June! Had some bad rains, otherwise it would have more mileage on it.

I'm just going to document what happened.
