And now for the rest of the story...
So I call the closest dealer to my office since the dealer near my home closed (2 months after I bought my bike but I'm not bitter, no) and ask if they can make me a key. They say yup and I head out of work an hour early so I can get there before they close. I battle traffic, stand in line at the parts counter only to be told they don't make keys anymore, their machine doesn't work very well.
So then I look on the Internet a bit, but don't come up with anything productive and it was Friday and I was hoping to ride over the weekend so I call the next closest dealer (a very large dealer south of DC in VA who I won't name) and they say they don't make keys. I was floored a dealer that large wouldn't make keys, they pointed me to a locksmith who was closed.
So I Call their sister store that's a bit farther away and low and behold they make keys ($16 for a $4 key). Hot damn. So I take my fiancee down to a National Park in the area and and stop at the dealer to get the key made (save gas, conserve trips) and I'm happy as a clam. Well we hike 10 miles and are exhausted when we get home so we just get food, a movie and showers. Sunday AM while she sleeps in, I head out for a ride and the key doesn't work.
Now pissed as all get out, I call a lock smith, he can do it but the weekend rate will cost me an extra $100. Wait till Monday, I take 2 hours off from work to get there for his last appointment of the day. He picks the lock on the gas tank, removes the gas cap, then the lock cylinder. He puts the key in the cylinder, does a little filing, the key now works. Oh and he did all this in less then 10 minutes, doesn't that make you feel secure locking your bike?
So 3 hours of lost wages, $152 for a non working key and lock smith visit and I'm back on the road.
So if you've just bought a bike or if you have CRS and loose stuff like me, get a 3rd key made, test it and keep it in your safe deposit box. If you ever get down to that last key, the first ride should be out to get more made. Make a 4th and 5th and give them to parent's, friends, anyone who might help you in time of need. I plan to go to Home Depot or a lock smith and have a half dozen made.
