Surprise Surprise, I'm happy with the stocker DL1K seat and stock screen

I did an even swap of my DL650 seat for a DL1000 seat with a forum member, and have spent about 15 hrs in it, including 6 straight hrs today. So far, I like it. The height is good for me with flatfooting no problem but not much to spare (I'm 6'1", 31 inch inseam), and no butt-burn-- quite comfortable in fact. I like the amount of padding, not too firm, not too padded. It doesn't slide me forward and when I accelerate hard the hump behind me keeps me from sliding back.

My last seat, on my K1200GT, was a $1000+ heated Corbin that I had built on a ride-in at the factory in Hollister, and it was comfortable in a hard tough-love way. I fully expected to ultimately choose a custom seat. Now I'm not so sure.

Equally surprising, the stock screen on the Madstad works great for me. After about 1000 miles, I get minimal buffeting, decent wind protection, it's small enough not to create problems in crosswinds or behind trucks...I like it just the way it is. I like that it doesn't rattle or shake over broken pavement at speed like a bigger screen probably would.

I'm really not missing my BMW...this 650 twin is very eager and great fun to run through the gears. I see no need to change sprockets. It really is great fun to ride a (relatively) slow bike fast. Some day I may go whole hog on the front and rear suspension but for now it's perfect functional (with the fork brace).

That means more money for other farkles :mrgreen:

I bought a low mileage used DL1000 and I have to say it is the most comfortable stock seat I have had. My first ride on it was about 500 miles. I only made it about 420 due to the summer heat (106 deg my noon) but the seat was fine. The seat has a nice countor and decent foam. For my forthcoming ride from San Antonio to the Seattle area though I did purchase a sheepskin from Alaska leather. I'll know after the second day how it really is.

Conversely, the stock seat on my Rocket is one flaming piece of junk. I bought a Corbin for it now and all is well.

No surprise at all. Everyone is different when it comes to the seat and windscreen. That's why most who have been around for a while will say hold off on the farkles. The bike will tell you what it needs to make you happy. Congrats, now wait for it to tell you something you do need. Don't worry, you'll be spending money in no time.

Interesting. My height is 6'0" and I have the same inseam. I found the Dl1000 seat pretty good and I too use the stock screen with the Madstad and it is fine.
I hade the FJR and GT in my past and SB's as well. All I had to have a custom seat, as well and liked it firmer than stock. It was out of the BMW camp I learned about the "Yoda Position" and I still ride with it on the 'Strom. I wonder if that has much to due with it? I have little weight on my rear end and have my knees deep into the tank grooves. I am curious if that is how others that don't have issues with stock if it maybe due to riding position. If correct than riders moving from cruisers and perhaps true touring bikes like Goldwings may have problems do to the body weight being too far back.

An example is many cultures eat , rest crouched down for hours. If westerners do it is very painful even for minutes. Thoughts?

It just goes to show how different we all are. I bought my wee with teh stock 650 seat. The seat was pretty darn awfull. So, I ordered a new Russell day long and sent the wee's seat in to get done. It should be here this week. In the meantime I was able to buy a DL1000 stock seat to use so the bike isnt down for 2 weeks. I gotta say the stock DL1000 seat is even worse than the 650 seat. Out of all the bikes I have ridden and the 15+ motorcycles I have owned, the DL1000 seat ranks right up there with the worst seat of all time if not being the absolute worst seat ever for me. My butt is in pain after 20-30 miles. I had a very long day ride planned for tommorow but its shrinking in size because I dont think I could tolerate that seat for that long. Its not just uncomfortable but painfull! I have the stock screen and no madstad. I get some buffeting but not horrible. I am hoping a madstad will completely alleviate it in combination with the tuono mirrors.

Agreed, I used to be a power hungry nutter, but now I find great pleasure in working the small 650 V-twin. It has just enough power to keep things amusing.

Yep, just evidence that we all are differnt and what works for one, doesnt necesarily work for the next guy. My 650 seat had discomfort and shape issues. The 1000 seat seems alot flatter resolving the shape issues the 650 had. However it feels like my but bones are the only part on the seat so I get some serious pressure points. After 125 mile ride yesterday, I was in pain. Much worse for me than the 650 seat. I did a 125 mile ride on that as well before sending it and needed a break but I could have kept going.

I've done 600 mile days on my 650, I've done 600 mile days on a 1000. I don't notice any difference between the seats except that the 1000 is taller.
