V-Strom/Droid

Just got a new Droid cellphone. Lots of apps, Found one, Pandora, a radio station that you build by searching favorite artists. Used it on a ride today with ear buds, Worked great, It finds songs and artists close to the one you pick in style and continues to play songs. If the phone rings You can answer, talk and then it automatically goes back to music, Also has GPS with voice directions. and close to what a Spot does for those that accept your invitation. Solved much of the problem of all the extra radios and equipment and I needed a new phone anyways. Worth checking it out.

Man, I just got one also and I can't believe how many gadgets it replaces.
1) GPS -- and it gives spoken directions through my Scala Rider bluetooth headset
2) radio/iPod
3) Spot

...and that's just when you are underway. At coffee stops you can surf the web and check weather radar, etc. The 5mp camera is sufficient for most uses, too. With a flash card and proper mount it could probably serve as a video camera while riding. The optional car mount from Motorola will work if I drill a small hole for the camera lens -- but it will be looking through the windshield.

And get this: when I'm home I can tether it to my computer and use it as a high-speed modem, allowing me to cancel my $40/mo DSL service. I'm on it right now, in fact.

This thing is da bomb!

I think it would last about 3 hrs, I have a car charger and accessory plug on my v-strom. Last night went for a 1 1/2 hour ride not plugged in and it still showed solid green,

Just FYI for others, Pandora works on the Blackberry, I phone, Palm and windows mobile. Great service. http://www.pandora.com/on-the-go.

There is another service called Slacker.com. Pretty much the same thing.

I've been running Pandora on my Iphone for a long time. Great app, but it is a battery hog. Good thing I can charge my phone on the bike.

Don't you guys ever ride anywhere where there is no cell phone service?

Of course. Unlike the eastern seaboard there are vast stretches of the west, and in particular the Sierra where I ride a lot, that have no cell service. So what? We used to ride all the time like that.

But that does bring up one drawback to the smart phone GPS compared to regular GPS units: most are "assisted GPS" which means that the signal brought down from the satellites is read by a standard GPS receiver, but the maps which the icon is applied to are acquired over the cell phone system. Ergo, no cell service, no maps.

That's where paper comes in. Just like the old days.

Of course, but not most days. I've got a few thousand songs on my Iphone that play without a cell signal and a Garmin mounted above the dash on my bike. I don't use my phone for GPS on the bike, but there are GPS apps available that don't rely on a cell signal for mapping.
