DL1000 vs 650 stock seats...does the 1000 put you in the wind more

I have the stock seat on my 650 and am comparing it with a DL1000 seat I borrowed from a fellow forum member. It's a little flatter and higher which is nice for leg room and butt comfort but I notice it sets me up higher which I assume means I will be in the wind more since I am higher relative to windscreen and fairing. Not sure if a little more leg room is a good trade-off for more wind. Interestingly I also noticed it puts me a little closer to the tank and my tank bag, the opposite of what I had thought.

For those that are running a DL1000 seat on a 650, did you find you had less wind protection?

Yeah, it basically raises you up about 1.5" so you will be a bit more exposed to the wind and weather. I made the change on my bike shortly after I bought it.

I find I can do long days (600 or so miles) without severe discomfort. I may send it out to a seat rebuilder through the coming winter but for this year I think it will be OK.

Yes it does affect wind protection. I found that for me it actually decreased buffeting. Everybody is different. The higher seat will likely allow more wind to hit you but whether or not that's a bad thing will depend on your body and preferences.

I have a Mr. Eds Moto seat that is approximately 1.5 inches higher than the DL100 seat. Yes, I'm up a little higher, but my Manta takes care of it. My knees are bad so the extra distance to the pegs helps.

not trying to thread hijack, but is the seat pan on the 650 and 1000 the same? I have been considering a 1000 seat as well like the OP, or just sending the seat I have to russell to get a day long. I know russell seats usually put you up higher. Not sure going higher on the 1000 would work, but I have room to go higher than the 650 seat.

I purchased a used DL1000 seat for my 650 from a fellow member here who went on to purchase, apparently, a Mr. Eds Moto seat. Not naming names though (^^^ two posts up ^^^) . The DL1000 seat had been customized slightly (padding modified and different covering material) so it's not quite a stock authentic item any longer, but it also does raise you up into the wind a bit, not a bad thing though. Good for the knees...and a good deal to boot.

Although not related to your query, I will say that close inspection on delivery seemed to reveal that the seat had indeed been farted on (!!!), so caveat emptor when purchasing a used seat from fellow (obviously gaseous) Stromtroopers.

I've got a 1000 seat on my 650. I didn't really notice a difference in wind exposure but I certainly noticed a major improvement in seating comfort - no more sore butt and squashed frog for me!

I've got two bum knees and raising the seat on my DL1000 is definitively an attractive option. I've purchased custom seats in the past on other bikes(Mustang, Corbin) but don't want to spend a fortune modifying this seat though. The stock seat on the DL1000 is actually the best I've ever had. I'd like it to be a bit higher and allow me to move further back though.

I bought a DL1000 seat on e-bay for $60.00, the DL1000 seat pan is the same as the wee's. Suzuki specs claim it's only .9 of an inch thicker than the wee seat, but I found it made a world of different in my comfort level. I found the wee seat to be as hard as a board! I haven't noticed any difference in wind buffeting and I'm 6'4", I wear an Arai VX-Pro 3 open face helmet with Panoptx (now 7eye) motorcycle glasses with transition lenses and Oakley over-the-glasses goggles (for when riding in heavy downpours or below freezing temps). I've found that open face helmets cause less wind buffeting by allowing the air to flow through the helmet, instead of the wind hitting the faceshield as it does on a full face helmet. I'm still running the stock wind screen and have a Madstad bracket sitting on the shelf that I'll probably never install, don't see the need for it! Open face helmets are also alot cooler to wear in the summer, but of course that changes once the temps drop into the 30's, at which time I add a silk face mask. One disadvantage of an open face helmet is that it allows bees and other bitting insects to enter the helmet easier.
