Cool Sold my BMW GT, ready to buy a Strom...update on page 4!!

I've been riding bikes since I was a kid and my current ride is a 2006 K1200GT. My passion is sport touring riding and I put on about 12,000 miles a year solo, mostly on 200-300 mile day trips in the Sierras and coastal California. Past bikes have included another BMW GT, a Suzuki Boulevard, and a Honda VFR, as well as lost of dirt bikes.

I finally came to a realization that I want a simpler, lighter, more basic and mainly cheaper bike than my GT. I sold it yesterday for $11,200. I like to pay cash for my toys, and I want to spend about half of that on a new bike. I've always had a hankering for the Strom, set up more towards sport touring than adventure riding.

So I'm in the market, looking on craigslist and elsewhere for a used Strom. Initially I assumed I would get the liter bike, but reading here makes me think that the Wee may be better suited to me and also cheaper. I'm leaning towards a 650 with ABS and less than 5,000 miles or so, preferrably pre-farkeled to my tastes

So any suggestions would be welcome! Big change for me, my GT had 152 HP, heated seats and grips, power screen, electronic cruise, GPS, radar, and was incredibly powerful and fast as well as great in the twisties. If any of you know Pashnit, you may know me from over there. So the Strom will be an adjustment.

My previous bike as of yesterday, sad to see her go but excited for a Strom...

Despite the on/off trottle issues the GT is a much better bike. But it ain't a simple one that's for sure.

I often lose control. I really I hate my life.

The only thing I can recommend is that you ride one first... kinda sounds "no duh"... just sayin. My wife has had her heart set on replacing her 08 KLR with a BMW 650gs (the one lunger)...Thought being that it would be a bit more road worthy than the KLR... tons of time and energy spent on her behalf searching and obsessing.
We drove out to Seattle today to look at one... as far as power, wind protection and comfort goes (not to mention cost/shop cost, etc)... gross disappointment (Off road use being a lowish priority). Finally got her considering the twin powered Wee... (thinks mine is a "bit much" for her)
I have a Vee and everything I have read would suggest the Wee is a champ too... These are great bikes and there are great deals to be found on used bikes of both sizes... but give them both a try if you can (especially being accustomed to so much power). Good luck on your search and I would be interested in knowing how this transition works out for you!

Check out the for sale postings on this board, Baldu in California has a mint 2009 orange (non abs) with farkles and an extended warranty for some great price, 6 grand or so. Great deal if you don't have to have ABS.

Regardless of which bike you choose, you really can't go wrong with either one. Some people prefer the ABS brakes of the 650 over the power of the 1000...others prefer the power of the 1000 over ABS brakes. Either way, I strongly suggest you ride both so you can make a decision based on your own personal likes and dislikes.
I chose the power of the 1000 over the ABS of the 650 and that was strictly a personal decision.
I'm still waiting for the 1000 ABS...

Thus far I regret the purcahase of my wee strom. The wind buffeting is horrible. Ordered a CalSci shield and it was actually worse. I'm waiting on the Madstad bracket to arrive this week and I hope it cures the problem.

If I would have known how bad the buffeting was, I would have purchased another bike. I cant believe there is such a following on this bike with the buffeting issue being so bad. I was hoping for a comfortable long range ride but I don't have that yet.

I have gone from the FJR to the VStrom. I did for as the FJR was a heavy pig and I wanted to ride fire and forest roads too. The headers and all that made it poorly suited for any off road as I didn't want to crush the pipes and lots of ABS. To be blunt I don't think you are going to find the Vstrom nearly as well suited for slab touring as the BMW was. The Vstrom is a compromise a sort of do everything bike. It handles pretty well and is fine on gravel and packed dirt roads. I found the 650 bit small and for the 40lbs difference in weight and went with the 1000. On the road the FJR was far smoother at high speeds and the brakes where much better. I would have liked ABS if I could turn it on or off on the VStrom. For myself it was a good choice for what i wanted to do. Day trips, back roads and fire trails. It is easy to ride and suites my needs. I found out I didn't really need a $600.00 Zumo, Radar detector, shelf, cruise control and heated grips. It suits my needs pretty well, and is simple. If it gets a dent or too that is OK, I expect that.

It may not be as simple as the bike.
I had more buffeting on my GS than I do on the Wee.
I wear two different helmets and one gets more buffeting than the other one does.
A previously owned K100RT had no buffeting at all [same helmet, funny that, I've had one helmet but four bikes in the last three years ].

Different screen shape/height, different helmets or even different mirrors may be all it takes to alter the buffeting, the physical height/shape of the rider may even be a factor.
Obviously the "buffeting issue" is not as big an issue as it is for you, hence the huge following for the Vee/Wee series of bikes.

I'm sure you will be able to find the answer, for me it will be when I replace my helmet.
Good luck, the Wee is a top bike with a near bulletproof motor [and FAR better value than a BMW, trust me on that].

There are mods for the ABS to make it switchable.
The Wee is comfortable cruising at 130/140kph [75/85mph], just how often are we able to travel at speeds above that for long stretches thes days anyway? [bloody beuracrats and nanny states exist everywhere these days].
Between the Wee and the Vee the power to weight difference is not that great.
As you say, the Strom is a very versatile bike and lets you go places the likes of FJR and the big touring Beemers struggle to get to [and it does get expensive if you drop all that fibreglass and plastic in the rough stuff].

The Wee and Vee are very capable slab tourers in the most part although dedicated touring bikes have some better comfort attributes [nothing that can't be added to the Wee/Vee though IMHO]

Wow, that's quite a change. I think it will be like comparing apples and gyroscopes, riding-wise. I never rode the K1300, but IMO, there's not much difference in ride experience (besides brakes, maybe) between the Vee and R1200GS. I only rode a Wee for about a mile, and frankly don't remember anything besides being pleasantly surprised.

I would think the ergos / height are going to be a big change - that and loosing a bunch of hp. The more in love you were with the BMW, the less I think you'll like the Stroms - they are a totally different beast, designed for a totally different riding style. If you find you like that different style, you will be happy with either Strom no matter what you end up paying for it.

Your criteria for wanting a new bike should be met with the Strom. I'm interested in your opinions after you've had the Strom for a few thousand miles.
