Help-Can't Get Bike To Fit.....

When I bought my Wee I found that I had discomfort associated with the placement of the handlebars.

I added Genmar 1up 1back bar risers which seemed to help somewhat.

As a began to ride more miles on this bike I began to notice that the saddle was uncomfortable.

I tried several different aftermarket saddles and eventually ended up with a Russell Day Long. The saddle arrived late last fall. I was able to get some rides in on this saddle before the winter months. Now that the weather has changed I have been able to go for some longer rides this spring.

It is a very comfortable saddle and it changed my riding position significantly.

I noticed that I am now more forward on the bike and that my ears are above my shoulders and my shouders are above my hips and my hips are above my ankle bones - perfect posture position.

The other thing that I noticed was that the saddle is about an inch or so higher than the stock saddle.

I don't have any issues with the higher saddle height when I come to a stop but I do notice that I am still reaching for the handlebars. So much that I really have to rotate my shoulders forward to reach the bars while I'm riding.

This position is ok for a short trip but becomes intorable for any long distances. I keep getting a spasm between the top of my shoulder blades/base of neck.

When I'm not riding (or working) I also swim competitivly. Rounded forward shoulders are a no-no when it comes to swimming and shoudler stability and most swimmers (as do I) spend a lot of time in the gym with weight training to prevent rounded forward shoulders.

My questions are:

How much further can the bars come back?

Do Rox Risers come back further than GenMar 1up-1back?

What other brand is available that provide a longer reach back?

Where would I source longer cables and hoses?

Should I be looking for another bike?

Any input or advise is greatly appreciated.

I'm in the same boat as you, although I went from my stock seat straight to the RDL in the Group Buy last fall.

I have Rox Elite 2" Risers on a new Pro Taper Raptor. I've got the Rox set up to go more back than up, trying to get a bend in my elbows.

Last fall, the seat arrived too late in the season to really get a feel for it. Like you, it put me up higher (I need a 1" taller windscreen now). It also put me back a little further, thus the reach issues.

Russell wants you to put 500 miles on the seat before you make any drastic decisions. I put 500 miles on it and then asked them about the problems I had/saw. I wanted to know why I was so high up (I was tippy-toeing to reach the ground) and so far back. They explained that, based on my photos, they needed to raise me up and move me back to get my legs into a comfortable position. This made sense, I knew my legs were cramped before, I installed Hiway bars because of this.

Over the winter, I installed Kouba lowering links. I no longer Tippy Toe the bike, I can pretty much flat-foot it. In fact, seat height is now a wash in my book.

My problem is the knot I get in the middle of my back while riding distances. I'm recovering from one right now, I had a 2 hour ride home (I live 17 miles away ;-)

In my correspondence with Russell, they told me to take more photos of me on the seat in the various positions that they require. One thing led to another and I never did that. I do intend to do this in the coming weeks as I've put 500 miles on it this season and would like to figure this out before the true season starts.

I'd love to figure out the knot problem, it's my only long distance problem. For me, it definitely stems from the reach and the grip I have on the bars. Because of the reach, I am not relaxing my arms, I am tense. This transfers to my back. I've noticed this while riding, if I take an arm off the bar and rest it on my tank bag or legs while riding, the knot on my left side (because I can't take my right hand off the bars...) subsides.

It could be that I have the wrong handlebars, perhaps I need more height, which would translate to less reach for me (if installed at an angle). I've never had this problem with other bikes.

As for cables and hoses. Blair can fix you up with new brake lines. It was a stretch last fall with the Rox Risers in place and the stock lines. As for cables, I rotated my throttle cable 180 degrees, so the cables exit beneath the grip and that basically did it for me. Any further back and I'd need new cables, and wire harness extensions.

Glen,

I my mind RDL has done their job. They have changed my position on the bike. I compared my before picture to my after picture and the result is dramatic.

Every thing seems to line up properly exept for too much shouder reach.

I'm still trying to achieve square shoulders and bent elbows.

That's exactly what happened to me. I solved the problem with these. http://www.barrisersonline.com/forwardrisers78.html
They call them forward risers, but I put them on so they move the bars back of course. A small distance can make a big difference. I'm 6"1" with a 33" inseam. The cables and hoses were just barely long enough to reach the new position. I had to remove the screw for the clamp that holds the brake line near the bottom of the triple tree. Try sitting on the bike on the center stand to see how much farther back you need to move the bars when your sitting straight. I figured I needed about 2" (diagonally) and that is about what I got. It worked out perfectly for me. I needed a higher windshield also.

Thank you for that link. You're right, small distances can make a big difference and these look like they are slightly bigger than GenMar up/backs.

I could use a bit more distance back. If I get any closer to the tank while I'm riding we'll be having children!

I'm very close to a comfortable setup and was hoping that the RDL would settle in some more.

I really don't feel like replacing all of my hoses and cables.

I forgot to mention that it makes a difference if you have ABS or not. The brake line is shorter if you have ABS and you would have to get a longer one.
