Fixing Speedo Error

I don't know if you guys have ever heard of this company, but he's a customer of mine and makes a device that will make your speedo read exactly correct. 12oClockLabs makes the SpeedoDRD for all kinds of bikes including the VStrom.

Since I installed the low gearing sprockets my speedo really needed correction. It was reading 120 km/hr when I was going 100.

The device is really easy to install and easy to setup. My speedo is now exactly what my GPS is telling me.

The idea looks good, but only good for the 1000 though I think, as the 650 uses a front wheel sensor.

Also nothing on the website specifically about the Vstrom, or in fact any bike specific details, maybe that will change though as most people would like to see a bit more detail before spending, even though your word is pretty good.

I agree he needs to put makes and models up front, which ones etc. The model I got fits a huge range of bikes and makes.

I think he's been so busy filling orders, and this business has grown so quickly he hasn't gotten around to adding info to his webpages.

In any case it definitely works for the DL1000. I should note that he ships worldwide very reasonably, good for those not in the States to know.

The instructions for setup at first seem rather complex, but setup really is very easy. Watch his video online to see how its done. It took me like 3 minutes.

Also he doesn't have any photos online to show where to find your connector, but I sent him a couple showing the DL1000 connector. It's a piece of cake to access and install. I followed the wire up from the front sprocket cover and found it quickly.

I just installed my Speedo Healer this past winter and programmed it this past weekend. I thought it was a little rough pushing two buttons and reading the single digit LED readout. I took a peek at the 12oclock labs programming instructions and realized how good I had it.

The price of $80, however, makes it a compelling alternative to the Speedo Healer. I think I paid a lot more just for the Healer itself, the Suzuki wiring harness tacked on a chunk of change as well.

While the Speedo Healer has a bunch of other functions (two memory banks, the ability to recall top speed, etc), the only reason I bought it and the only reason I will use it is to correct my speedometer due to my sprocket change.

I do wish I'd seen this back in January. . .

Cheaper solution

You can buy a face plate replacement for the speedometer for only $40 ($20 if you don't mind a second) which seems to me to be a pretty easy and easily reversible solution to this problem, as long as your bike is stock. In fact someone has one for sale in the marketplace section of this site right now.

Well as I said the setup seems complex but is really very very simple. Only one button, watch his video and you'll see how easy it is to setup.

The unit does have a top speed indicator feature too.

I haven't ridden enough to check odometer function but I'm not that concerned with the odo being a bit off. I have a fuel gauge and really avoid ever running the tank too low.

If Suzuki designed the bike to have a speedo that's 5% high but the odometer is correct, I would assume the odometer will now be 5% low with stock gearing. With my gearing my odometer might be 15% or more low. I doubt it though since the odo is very likely tied to the speedo in a ratio so it should be no more than 5% low.

Ok my head's starting to spin inside, best thing is to ride and check some mileage posts or something...

SpeedoDRD my experience

I live in a strict speed enforcement area and need an accurate speedo. Going slower than the speed limit does piss some off some so I decided to try SpeedoDRD. I found the install and setup of SpeedoDRD very simple.

To install I put the tank in service position, followed the pickup wire from the chain cover. The black 3 wire connector was about mid-tank. Was able to disconnect and plug in the Y connector without too much trouble.

I decided to store the device under the seat. I swing SpeedoDRD out by my left knee when making an adjustment. I can leave SpeedoDRD out to check max speed if on a long trip or something.

Mine is currently set to -11.3 compensation. When I did the initial calculations I came up with a speedo -13.3, and the odo was -8.3 off. I'm not as concerned with the odometer. I haven't checked the current odometer adjustment with my GPS against the new comp settings. Will post later when I get numbers.

For a quick guide

Green release = current adjustment
Red release = max speed
Orange release = setup mode

Once in setup mode you serially go through 3 setup option groups,

1st is the option to change locality from MPH to KPH, or no change,
2nd is to decide a positive (Green) or Negative (Red) compensation.
3rd input compensation

If you lose your place turn your key off and restart..

After you turn on the ignition switch and after the device completes it's bat

Press the button and release when the light turns orange

Green release = MPH -> KPH
Red release = KPH -> MPH
Orange release = No change

Next sequence

Green release = positive compensation (Speedometer reads less than actual speed)

Red release = negative compensation (Speedometer reads more than actual speed)

Next sequence

Press and hold button for 10's position, count lights for value (ten flashes = 0)

Press and hold button for 1's position, count lights for value (ten flashes = 0)

Press and hold button for 10ths position, count lights for value (ten flashes = 0)

once you finish the 10ths position the device will flash back the values inputted.
