How do you communicate with pillion?

I have been riding more and more with daughter and at times we find it difficult to communicate while on the road. I can tap her on the knee and point at things I think she might find interesting, and I can somewhat look in the mirror to see if she is ready to go (looking for her "thumbs up"), past that it's a challenge.

I figure there is no point in re-inventing the wheel, how do you guys communicate with your pillion while on the road?

Bluetooth headsets.
We have Scala units but there are others. It opens up a whole new world of interest and enjoyment particularly when I'm riding with my son or daughter neither of whom are really experienced bike riders.

There are a lot of good threads out here on this (Intercom).

I use an Autocom Intercom. Mine is about 5 or 6 years old and was originally installed in my Beemer. Installation of the unit itself takes less than an hour. The hardest part is the installation of the headphones and mic in the helmets. I've done this a few times over the years and can do it in about an hour or two while watching a movie in our family room.

I'm lucky that my wife's helmet fits both of my daughters perfectly so I only have two helmets that currently need to work with the Autocom. My son, however, is going to be riding with me this season, I'm not sure how if the headset & mic will fit in a Youth small helmet, though I will find out soon enough.

We have a intercom ($120 IMC, Bear model that works great) but haven't hook it up on this bike yet. What we do for now is if somethings wrong or she wants to stop, she gives me a pinch on the waist. If she wants me to look right or left she'll slap my thigh in that dirrection, otherwise we have to yell, or talk loud with the visors open. It's really dangerous to lean back and try to talk with someone on the back, and you could have a wreck if you're not careful! You have to be a little creative on your signals! Cheers--BB

I would suggest you (both) read through THIS before going out again. Real good stuff. I "found out" about it by Raptor02 posting it up in THIS thread.

Chapter 5 deals with communications. Both whole threads are worth a read.

Worth mentioning...the article is written with husband/wife or boyfriend/girlfriend references...read it alone first before sharing with a child.
Teens are probably OK, cuz they will find humor in the text.

I really like NOT being distracted by comments regarding my driving--as I am in the car. That leaves communication to a 'thumbs down' when she wants me to go slower.

Bluetooth headsets. I just purchased a pair of Sena SMH10 Intercoms. I haven't had my wife on the back with them yet, but I've used mine several times already for music while riding and a phone call (just to test the function, I don't advocate chatting on the phone while riding).

Juvenile bits aside, there's some good info in there. It's a bit windy, though.

A few interesting things I've learned about carrying a passenger:

1. If your passenger is a 220 pound male friend, make sure he understands that it is best to NOT use the peg to mount. I cannot hold up that kind of weight off-center.

2. A woman that I used to ride with got so good at leaning slightly with me in turns that I found myself surprised -- the bike would snap right into turns with gusto. It was fun and very controllable, but I did need to remember it! (This is definitely preferable to a pillion who leans the wrong way, which can be a serious danger.)

3. Good shifting technique is important. She got kinda tired of helmet-thunk at every gear change.
