First Oil Change

I picked up my new '09 orange Wee a couple of days ago and gave it its first oil & filter change last night with just 130 kilometers (80 miles) on the odometer and I could not believe what I saw in the oil.
I found quite a healthy amount of (I assumed) metal filings or particles suspended in the oil. There was also metal filings stuck to the drain plug which I suspect is magnetic.
I cannot imagine what the oil that came with a new Wee would look like at the recommended first service (at the 600 miles mark)!

That's pretty normal for a first oil change. Some aluminum is involved from machining the new engine castings and the steel is from the gears getting their first wear in.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

Remove the magnet from the drain plug...you'll sleep better.

Change it again at 600; switch to Synthetic and you will be a happy camper for life. Orange #19 goes in for it's first valve check next week and then it will be off to SD in June.

Can't wait.

[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]Out there looking for myself.

No luck yet.

I hope you're joking. (My sarcasm meter might be broken today, so forgive me.)

The magnet's purpose is to prevent the recirculation of those particles, which would cause more wear (or clog your filter).

EOTS: what you saw is the reason for the early first oil change. It's expected. Just go ride and enjoy it. If you're still seeing that after 1000 miles and a couple of oil changes, then maybe it's worth talking about ...!

Cheers ...

Thank you all for your advice and suggestions. I will for sure change the oil and filter again at 600.

I remember my first oil change as well. I couldn't believe the amount of metallic particles in the oil. Like you, it was at around 100 miles so I changed it again at 300 and 600 just to be sure it was cleaned up. It's a great bike...you'll love it! Bucky in Albuquerque
