vibration noise at instrument cowling fix

Couple weeks ago a new noise appeared and grew that is clearly the black plastic cowling where the seam is at top middle in front of instrument cluster. When I rev bike I can press with hand and quiet it immediately by just pressing on top center to press that joint gap together. Fasteners appear tight.

I tried something easy by just pressing some electrical tape in seam and may have helped only a little a bit but it is still there (notably at higher RPM accel or when backing down). I was thinking of maybe loosening a tiny bit and putting a bead of black RTV sealer and tightening after it sets up but not sure..

Before I went on to other ideas I thought I'd check to see if others has this and found a good fix.

Any fix ideas that worked?

I'll be watching this post.

My buddies Vee runs much quieter than mine, and has no plasti-rattle.

I'm thinking 2-Bros will be the most effective fix.

There are a pair of rubber doughnuts #14 in there that snug the parts together as well as keeping them from rubbing. Maybe you are missing one or both.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

I have the same problem, but mine stems from different rubber pads. I am missing two rubber pads that adhere to the top of the plastic gauge cluster, between the gauge cluster and the headlight cowling. I found that with higher RPMs if i reached up and pinched the joint, the vib went away. Usually occurred at ~6500 and up.

No vibration or noise but I do have a gap of maybe 1/8 inch between the instrument cluster and its base. Is this common? Probably came from heat distortion over the years (2004 DL650). I have black Gorilla Tape covering the gap.

I had a vibration coming from the left side where the top black plastic meets the side fairing. After checking it out I discovered one of the rubber grommets (donuts) was missing where the top plastic connects to the fairing. I grabbed a package from Autozone and popped one in, problem fixed.

sounds like grommets

thanks for the replies. Interesting, I had bike in shop about month ago and they took tank off --and maybe "lost" something. I also noted just looking at bottom front before I posted this that I think I am missing plactic snaps shown in diagram that go up from bottom as they were open holes.

I actually never took any of that apart when I previously took tank to do air cleaner as I followed Sheps instructions post and you can just remove selected fasters and flex plactic cowling enough to slide it out. I wonder if shop decided to take all apart?

thanks for all tips -- and diagram GW.

[Darn - now I have to take all that stuff apart - maybe my generic grommets from HArbor Freight will fit missing ones]
