OK, who has painted their Frame?

I really want to paint my Strom this winter and have been hoping to find someone that has painted their Frame. I have an '02 with a Silver Frame. I want to paint my Strom Red, but the silver frame wouldn't work. I want to paint it black, I've been kicking around the idea of using bedliner.

I don't want to have to take the whole bike apart to do this. I've looked it over and really think I can mask off the engine and other components (all the fairing parts and tank will be off anyway) and paint the Frame, at least the part of the Frame that is exposed when the fairing and other parts are back on the bike.

Anyone done this yet?

Bedliner-type-stuff attracts dirt and eventually looks dirty and won't ever be made to look clean again. Not much of a frame shows so maybe that would be OK for you.

I can't live with my aluminum-colored (butt-ugly) Happy Trails pannier any more but I have a friend who is a wizard with a paint booth. Now I have to find the matching paint. Sure you don't have a friend who'll shoot color for you if you do the masking?

Honestly, though, I just replied to tell you I really like your photo gallery work. Went through it all last night... It's a talent I don't have, so I must appreciate it in others or do without.

Having painted a couple of bikes before, I can tell you 2 things;

1. it's really easy, just requires attention to detail and overall don't rush it;

2. just take everything out of the frame - extra couple of days work, but the finish will be much better and you'll be much happier. You will ALWAYS be able to see the flaws - even if someone else doesn't - and it will bug you forever!
