How many have made the switch from Wee to Vee, or vice versa?

I know, I know... flame war territory. I'm not looking for drama, just honest answers.

I bought a DL650. My last bike was a GS500E. For those who don't know, I went from a 384 lb carbureted parallell twin to a 427 lb 650cc V-twin. When you consider the added drag of the V-strom aerodynamics & my side cases... well, they seem almost equally as fast.

Now, this goes without saying, but the V-Strom differs in a least a hundred different ways that, to me, makes it a more enjoyable ride. I'm simply talking about power-to-weight ratio.

When I ride my buddy's Ninja 650R (parallel twin 650cc), it seems A LOT faster than my V-Strom. I'm not complaining. To me, faster is safer. I once wrecked a 750cc Katana. But riding that Ninja 650R is exhilarating. I crave more of that in my bike.

All of the above leads me to wonder how many have actually jumped ship and sold their 650cc for a 1000cc, or perhaps ditched the added weight of the 1000cc for the 650cc. Or, if you own both, which do you ride more?

This is purely a search for numbers i.e. hard data, not a discussion of the subjective differences between the two bikes. I'll tell ya, I'm considering the conversion.

I came off of a KLR and bought a Vee. I liked it, I really liked it. Lots of power, thus my problem. I am in my 40's, not 20's, but yet my mind plays tricks on me, assuring me that I am indeed still in my 20's. My body begs to differ. It seems it takes a wee bit longer to recover from things... . I rode the Vee until one day I was coming home and hit a turn much quicker than I should have. I did not wreck, but went all the way across the road, across the oncoming lane and into the grass. I went home that evening and put in on Ebay. I found that there was no way that I could possibly ride that thing and not do a 100+ several times during my trip.

The story goes on.... I bought another KLR, knowing that machine and appreciating it's meagerness. Rode it a year or so, sold it and bought a used Wee. While the Wee is certainly not a KLR, it is not a Vee. For some reason, I am less inclined to do 100+ on it, although I can. It is just the right amount of power for me and will go as fast as you need to go thru the twisties, plus you don't have to plan when you're going to have to pass someone, like on the KLR (i.e. get a run and go).

All this being said, I like both of them. Just seems the Wee is safer for me with my inability to control my throttle hand .

Thumbs up

I own a DL1000. Never owned a DL650, but rode one once.

The PO of my DL1000 traded it in for a DL650. I talked to him last weekend, and left with the understanding:
He misses the power sometimes, but with the friendlier around-town shifting and better gas mileage of the Wee, he still thinks he made the right choice.

He did a 10-trip to Canada on the Vee when he owned it, and just a few weeks ago did the same trip on the Wee. Having done it on both bikes, he wishes he could've had the Vee again for that trip... but if he could only own one, it would still be the 650 - the mpg is a big factor, and he thought the Vee was "too powerful" for short stop-n-go trips around town. The particular Vee in question (now mine) suffers from a little chudder, a little coughing, etc. - that might be part of it, too.

So, second hand info, but at least of the type you're looking for. I'm sure anyone who's had both wishes they had the other one from time to time: Weesters will miss the 1000 on the highway; Vee folk (at least the cheap/ poor ones) will miss the Wee every time they fuel up.
