I think you've picked a winner.
I've had a Valkyrie Tourer and a Interstate and loved them both for two up riding. But for playing around on the dirt roads close to my house, they weren't the best.
I moved down to a Kawasaki Concours last year and this year I sold it for my second V-Strom 650. I had my first V-Strom 650 at the same time as the Valkyrie Interstate. It was used for commuting and the Valk was used for heavy touring with my wife.
Currently I'm doing all of my riding solo. Our daughter is just about to turn three so she's not riding on the passenger seat yet.
But at least my wife lets me commute to/from work & escape on my own every once in a great while.
The V-Strom is very capable of replacing both the KLR and the Valk. I think it's a nice fit between those two models.
Both versions of the V-Strom will probably do you well. I prefer the Wee because of the lower cost of admission (purchase price), the lower insurance premiums, the lower weight and the better gas mileage.
Coming from a Valk Tourer, you you probably wouldn't even miss the acceleration difference between the 650 & 1000 versions.
At about half of the Valk's weight and 2/3 of it's horsepower, the Wee is more than capable of keeping pace with a Valkyrie in a straight line... and in the corners? You can wave buh-bye to your buddies on the VRCC board.
