First day to work on new vstrom

Today is the first day I rode my new to me 2013 vstrom to work. Unfortunately it's also the closest I've come to a probably fatal accident. The bike's already a bit scary compared to my previous 2007 ninja 250r (mostly its just huge). I like that it runs seemingly effortless even up to 80 mph.

On the highway close to where I turn off downtown I had gone in the right lane but the car in front of me was too slow (like 50mph) so I decided to flip on my turn signals, check my mirror, shoulder check then "mosey" to the second lane of a highway that's 5 lanes. Well...some idiot going 100mph+ flies right be me in that second lane, thankfully while I'm still crossing that line. I'm not seeing how I would have survived that one...

Glad you are OK. So...was it that you couldn't just wait behind the slower car until your exit?
How close were you to exiting?
There is little lane discipline these days, which makes riding/driving more difficult and so you have to drive more defensively and be 360 degrees aware.

The problem was the guy going way faster than any other traffic around. Even if I would have been in a car it would have been bad. Just complaining about that idiot who's going 40+mph faster than anyone else on the road and doing it next to the slow lane on a multi lane (4+) highway near downtown.

No time for anyone, especially him, to react. It's called reckless driving on his part. I've been riding this route on the ninja 250 since late march, daily since mid may. I put 3000 miles on that ninja, most of it doing this commute.

The vstrom 650 does well. I really like the massive upgrade in headlights, much higher riding position and good wind protection. I may have to start consistently wearing hearing protection as it sounds like my helmet is getting slapped around.

Yup, folks will use any lane the can to try to get around slower traffic, well anyone slower than they want to go.
Only way to avoid being run over is to check and double check.
I think the DMV booklet for driving in Calif is to check your mirrors every few seconds, 5-8.'
But sometimes the fast folk come up so quickly they are difficult to track.

Last week I was on a 3 lane section of highway where the left lane merges into the center lane to become a two lane highway. Interstates I-81 & I-78. I was in the center and there was a car and traffic to my right so I could not get over. All of a sudden right after the merge point I am now was is considered the left lane and a car comes screaming but about a foot away from my left side because he didn't want to use his brakes and file in behind me.

There was a time when this kind of activity would have gotten under my skin but anymore if I make it through unaffected that's good enough for me and I go about my day.

Considering the car was going 100+ who likely crossed 3 lanes to fly through the lane I was trying to get to in order to probably pass all the "slow" traffic in the fast lanes. Just a quick reminder of how fragile life is...definitely won't tell my wife about this she's already scared of me riding.

Here in Orlando we are going through the 3 + years of I-4 construction. You could not pay me to drive that road on a bike.
There are so many pot holes and pavement unevens, detours. narrow lanes, everybody going real fast and then slam on the brakes.

I'll take the back roads any time to avoid it at all cost. I feel your pain in having to drive that senario everyday.

Keep your head on a swivel. You might even try to ask your boss if there is anyway you can alter your work hours / commute times to be
In between rush hour crazy ones.

2017 DL 650 , Shad 23 bags, Givi crash bars, 32 watt LED aux lights , Goldwing pegs, Metalic silver front fender, Lazer cut aluminum Chain guard, Madstad 20" windshield
light smoke tint , Blu/blk Driven Racing Billet bar ends, Dbl Take adventure mirrors , BeadRider Ceramic bead seat cover on order.
Stock exhaust for now. Yoshimura 3/4 system simmering on low in the oven.

Best defense is a good offence. As a daily commuter for last 40+ years, a lot has changed with volume and ignorance. Road Craft is lacking.
I spend most of my time in the mirrors. I'm working on a plan to move the V strom's mirrors onto the fairing for better line of site.

WOW - Glad you're OK!!!

Incidents like yours are the reason I no longer ride in city traffic/interstate hwys. Countryside riding ONLY for me

This is great when you can swing it. I was able to arrange this once when my commute was pretty insane - it saved me a ton of time and stress each day.
