Wow I was just browsing at motorcycles, and I found a nice looking DL650 for only $1,000.00

They say it needs a starter clutch replaced. Up until today I don't recall ever hearing of the starter clutch.

This looks like a good deal for someone. So how difficult is the "starter clutch" to replace?

Not a major mechanical job. probably less labor charge than adjusting the valves. plus the new parts cost.

Yeah; I'd do it myself. Buy the bike, fix and sell it maybe. Just not sure if it's worthwhile, I already have a 2007. Buy the 04, fix then compare it to the 07, sell whichever one I don't want.

I just had my starter clutch out. Toughest part is removing the bolts that hold it onto the rotor.

Need the special rotor removal tool also.

So, does the owner have to bump start it the way it sits?

There is a good chance replacing the starter clutch will take care of the problem and also a good chance it'll need something more. Until you get it opened up and do an investigation you won't know.

You pay your money and take your chances.

I got the impression that when these go out, the starter sticks "on" somehow. So you can start if, but the starter does not disengage. I don't know for sure, I emailed the owner, waiting to hear back.

I'm mostly just kicking tires but it is kinda tempting if it wasn't too difficult or expensive.
