Copyright Reference Materials

For years we have adamantly refused to allow any reference or link to pirated manuals.

We are considering a change. Many sites online (including other verticalscope sites) have such materials posted for members to freely view. We are considering something along the likes of the Marketplace - viewable only by people with 20 or more posts.
Would you guys consider the ability to refer to such things on our site good - or an offence against copyright that we should continue to ban?

Have your say on what happens, Think about it, and give your yes or no.

Thanks,
Brockie

Seems a long while back someone posted a repair manual file that i downloaded but haven't availed myself of the info.
i stumble across the file occasionally accidentally.
Lots of forums have access to info and i guess it's a conscience thing. How honest do you feel about sharing source access?

Well, honestly I think that manuals such as the Vstrom manual from Suzuki should be made readily available to all purchasers of the original bike and subsequent owners at no charge.

They make their money of the bikes, helping customers service them and take care of them should be a no brainer. Problem is that even if you decide to allow those links to be posted, we depend of Suzukis benevolence not to get nailed for copyright infringement or whatever you want to call it.

With it on other sites then maybe the risk is minimal and the benefits higher?

I'm not saying this as someone who agrees with it, but the Digital Millenium Copyright Act is still going to apply to the site's actions even if the members are in favor of this, and the site is the one that would be held liable for posting copyrighted material. The fact that other Verticalscope sites are doing it probably means that none of the copyright holders have filed takedown notices because they're unaware that it's being posted. Or they're aware and don't care, which is doubtful, since failure to enforce copyright protections can weaken a company's copyright claim.

Unless they've repealed certain sections of the DMCA, the forum could have some legal exposure for encouraging this.

Yah, it's not like the manual is pricey when someone offers it for sale. I got a copy in the for sale section a while back.
Seems folks are always trying to get a super bargain or free. Being frugal or just cheap?

I am asking for a yes or a no.

I can point out sites all over the net, and even point to pirateers who blatantly sell their copies online. We will of course immediately delete any post or thread upon complaint.
There is no way that black SUV's full of FBI agents will descend on our homes and drag us away. The issue is - does your conscience support the availability of service data on this site?

Yes or no please.

No. This resource is to valuable to jeopardize just because people are to cheap to buy what they need to properly take care of their Stroms.
