Used bike purchase out of state and shipping/payment logistics

Hi,
I remember reading about forum members buying used bikes out of state and having them shipped fairly inexpensively through a site where people can submit shipping bids? But I cant find any of these posts, there is too much other stuff related to part shipping.
Asking for a friend who wants to buy a bike out of state.
Also, how to deal with payment to ensure he actually gets a bike for the money sent?
Thanks!

As a past driver, please don't put it out to bid. Determine a fare price and go with that. This allows a driver that is on that route to plan a pick up and drop that works into his or her schedule.
Remember, the driver pays the fees and it's about 20% .

This is good to know. Wife and I want to ship my bike to Seattle and peak our heads into Canada for a day or two then go south and ride the PCH down to San Diego. I was going to start looking for ways to get the bike there, and you just gave me a good starting point. Not enough vacation days to ever make the round trip and too long till retirement so this is the only way we will be able to do this ride in the next 20 years.

I was in the same boat once and used to ship my bike to ME from CA and ride into Nova Scotia. Shippers would strap it to a pallet and it was around $500 one way. It was years ago and I'm sure stuff has changed. I would ship bike shop to bike shop. There were ads in the MC mags at the time. Allied rings a bell.

I bought my '09 from a shop in North Carolina in 2013 with 1200 miles on it; they shipped it to Virginia for $300 to $400 and it was delivered to my doorstep. When I bought my wife's '93 Honda Nighthawk 250, it came form Connecticut to Virginia for $350. Was delivered in a Mercedes van by a private hauler.
May take a little longer to get delivery if there are any title issues but you are well protected if paying by Paypal or major credit card.

I'm sure the bike shops don't do this service for free do they? What's the etiquette here? I was thinking of sending to a dealer in Seattle and have them do an oil change (I've never had a dealer change my oil) or some other minor maintenance before I pick up in order to compensate for receiving the bike.

I think one ME Suzuki dealer charged me $25 and another was no charge. This was over 20 years ago. I called and asked them if it they were ok with receiving my bike first before scheduling it. They only had to accept the bike and store it and store it again on my return for pick up by the shippers. The one that didn't charge anything, I gifted them a subscription to a local (San Fran) motorcycle rag.

Not sure PayPal will insure you for sending money for a vehicle.

You are correct, sir....vehicles are ineligible for PayPal Purchase Protection. I offer my apology for the misinformation.
