Can't answer your question as to how big a box you'll need to carry your stuff, but Pelican boxes are kind'a spendy for what you get. Check out the Apache boxes from Harbor Freight. Basically a knock-off of the Pelican and much cheaper. Use their 20% OFF coupon and you're looking at a water-proof heavy-duty case for $48.

Pelican 1550 = 20.6" x 16.9" x 8.1"
Pelican 1520 = 18.06" x 12.89" x 6.72"

Apache 4800 = 17-7/8". x 12-7/8" x 6-1/8"
Apache 3800 = 14-7/8"x 10-5/8"x 6-1/8"

I prefer the Pelican 1550 for the extra capacity but if not using Pelican then I'd choose the Apache 4800.

There is a difference in quality but also agree for what it is and what its being used for in this instance I'm not sure the Pelican is worth the premium. YMMV.

I have a Pelican "Vault" brand case that is about 12x16x6. Cabelas sells them as pistol cases. I think it was about $50. It is big enough to replace the glovebox I had on my last bike and then some. I carry a thermos, gloves, a bottle of water, sometimes an airhawk cushion, maps, etc. I really missed the glovebox. Sometimes I wish it was bigger but usually not.

It is easy to get my leg over but not big enough for a helmet obviously. My wife likes it as a backrest of sorts. I seldom lock it but it has holes for a padlock. I'm thinking I'd like to attach some spools and use a cargo net or tail pack on top of it. It is super easy to just flip the latches and throw stuff in it.

The Harbor Freight ones are quite similar, but I'd consider one thing- it is black and sits in the sun. It has to have some pretty good material in it to keep from softening or warping or decomposing in the sun. My Pelican box has only been on there for a few months but shows no issues from the sun. I'd say it is "almost waterproof" but I put papers in plastic bags inside it. DD

Yeah I was also going to suggest the Apache cases from HF. If you go to the store, they have them in stock so you can actually see them to get an idea how big they are. If you ride there, they might let you take it out to the parking lot to put it on your rear rack to see how it looks

I will also say no matter what case you get if its a black plastic (Pelican, Seahorse, Apache, Princess Auto, etc) type its best to cost it periodically with some plastic dressing that has some UV protection in it.

No matter what case you get if its exposed to sun long enough left unprotected it will fade.

If you go to HF as them if you can take a LG and XL case out to hold up against your bike to see what will work best for you. You may have to give them you drivers license and credit card as a guarantee you'll be back.

From my experience the Large 3800 will look too small on the bike but thats through my eyes. You may feel differently.

These are what I used back when I had my V-Strom (and they're still on my current bike)

They're imports sold under the Duratool name, and came from a company called MCMElectronics. They've apparently changed hands and are now called Newark, but they still sell a case that looks really similar. The dimensions of mine are:

Outside: 22.5" x 16.5 x 8.5

Inside: 19.5" x 13.5" x 8"

"No matter where you go, there you are."

I wanted capacity so I got a Hardigg military surplus box. 18X18X12. Securely bolted to the factory luggage frame.
Cheap too. It was like $20. Cost $25 for shipping.

I can say I've just ordered a Givi v56nna.

I've got an upcoming 5 day trip, three hours to get there so I can only share afterwards if the capacity and ability to offload it on arrival works out well.

At this time I don't want to add side cases but my experience from this trip may modify that opinion.

I'm hoping I can stay non too top heavy and still have sufficient stuff.

I may add a small tank bag but want to go small there, quick off/carry into restaurants etc.

Pls share your story when known 😎

How are you guys attaching these cases to the top rack? I've already got an Apache 4800, but am not sure how to attach it.
