No matter, mine gets premium as recommended, and I dont give it a 2nd thought.
My ZRX recommends 87, and does great on it. My '14 Vstrom 1000 recommends Premium/min 90. The ZRX gets generally 42-46 mpg highway, the Vstrom gets generally 45-50 mpg, so the cost is about the same for both bikes. It's a wash.
Mine runs fine on the regular here apart from . There's one hill near where I live where I always hit a red light on the commute home. Mine will pink coming down that hill slowing for the red light. It hasn't done it anywhere else, just that one place. Out of town where it mostly gets ridden, no problems on regular at all.

colour is a bit of a factor, swore I'd never get another black motorcycle, people have a hard enough time seeing bikes as it is, even though I try to avoid riding at night. I like the yellow but the yellow seat on the 2018 is too much IMO. still up in the air
on the other hand the stock seat is awful and you will replace it pretty quick : ) I put a black seat concepts on my 2018 yellow.

They are way more expensive than a car to maintain and far less practical.

So admit it we ride because it's fun.

$100 more a month to ride the 1000, works for me.
It's "funner" than the 650!

for sure, like I said its worth the cost premium to me. I also find it mor economical to operate then my Ford Fusion but not by much. I had an F150 prior to that and it was MUCH cheaper then it.

I also do all of my one work so that helps

now I'm not even sure what bike I saw with that seat. I'm positive it was solid yellow but after looking on suzuki's website, yelliw is up near the top of the list. its beautiful.....

The 2018 1000 comes with a black and yellow seat, the 650 has a black seat. From teh side the 1000 seat looks black if you cannot see the top of it. The yellow seat gets dirty/stains very easily.

I have the 2018 1000 and swapped the seat for a seat concepts kit. Way more comfortable and looks much better

I'll attach a few photos of my yellow 2018, the one with it in the background you can see the new seat concepts seat from MX1 Canada.

Weird, Ive never heard of an engine pinging or exhibiting spark knock on deceleration, a no-load condition...

Yep, weird. I also rate it as 'mostly safe' to run regular, particularly on long hauls which is what my 1000 mostly does. Just pointing out that 'always fine on regular' isn't correct and I assume that pinking on light load is why Suzuki recommends premium.

It is double weird since the engine management shuts off the fuel on the overrun and doesn't start spraying again until lower revs (I used to know the exact revs but have forgotten. I think it stops fuel if off throttle, warm engine over about 3,000 rpm and starts fueling again below around 2,000 rpm.)

I would expect the highest likelihood of detonation/knocking/pinging at lower revs up to the torque peak with highest throttle openings as this tends to have the highest effective compression. 2014+ DL1000's have tuning for much more low end torque compared to first generation which is likely a big part of why the recommendation of super on the 2014+ DL1000 and there is no recommendation for super on the first gen DL1000.

2006 DL650: 202,000 km 125,500 miles, Sold
2012 DL650 139,500+ km, 86,700+ miles. Sold
2015 DL1000 New July 2015 165,000+ km, 103,000+ miles.

This can help preventing from cars pulling out in front of you (SMIDSY)

the staining was one of my concerns, I do all my own work and know I would end up leaving marks but it looks like that holds true for all the 1000's, grey, blue etc....

I was having a hard time deciding so I left it up to the girlfriend, the bike is ordered and coming directly from suzuki's warehouse.

thanks again to everyone that helped ease my conscience, I have no doubt I made a good decision, cant wait.
