2018 riding goals anyone?

Several buddies and I used to make the annual New Years Day ride-in to Stockton, Alabama. For us it was about 180 miles one way. It was an all day ride to each lunch at the mid-point and gawk at motorcycles.

However, with an ambient temp of 22* Fahrenheit I decided to skip any kind of New Year's Day ride for 1/1/18. That's not as cold as some of you are dealing with, but hey - for Alabama, that's frigid!

I did go out and record the odometer readings on the bikes. 78,458 on the Wing and 3,994 on the 'strom.

While I can't project a number of miles my 2018 goal is to ride every chance I get.

Which is the same as last year ... and the year before ... and the decade before that!

Current ride: 2001 GL1800; Gone away: 5 BMW's, 4 Honda's, 3 Suzuki's

As long as the highway pegs help my arthritic knee I plan to commute as much as possible on the Strom and to take at least one multi-day trip - some friends gave me a book on the Owens Valley and I now have several new spots to visit in addition to some more time checking out Gardnerville and the Carson Valley. (its only 421 miles each way . . .)

I've been toying with the idea of riding to Ridgecrest, CA from here which is about 700 miles each way and 13 hours on the interstate. That's a goal for me for this year. Don't have a Strom anymore so either the old Suzuki GS or the KLR 650 will do. If my wife comes with, it will be the GS for sure. I did 200 miles yesterday on the KLR and know it can easily handle road trips like that. That area has so many places to explore, not to mention everything in between, I'd really like to ride the KLR but we'll see. I've been about halfway before, stopping in Seligman, AZ. which is maybe 400 miles from here on the GS but went North from that area into Utah instead of continuing on to CA.

Oh, I should add this year I'd also like to ride as much and as often as possible, but to go see my grand kids in CA is a goal.

I've just relocated to Vancouver Island for a year or so. Looking to ride the PCH down to LA this spring (maybe further to get my passport stamped in Mexico).

Right now there is just one closure on the PCH from a land slide.

I didn't burn any vacation hours this holiday season with the intention of taking longer rides this summer. My usual pattern is 300+ mile day rides and some overnighters. Need to expand my riding radius from home. Goals this year include heading East to Beartooth and Chief Joseph Scenic Byways, possibly Yellowstone (been there done that and the crowds/traffic suck, but it's my favorite place to be), and hopefully head West to explore much of Oregon. My adult son lives near Portland and rides a KLR and an MV Agusta sport bike. The years are passing by quickly and I need to connect and ride with him whenever possible. Can't wait for spring and heading out on the open road... paved or not!

Attended my first Barber Vintage Festival last October, I would like to ride there this year, from San Diego that is at least a two week trip for me.

We rode the Southern half of the PCH last Summer, had to ride around the landslide (dont worry Caltrans is on the job! )I saw a video of two guys that found a way around on dirt roads. More fun than the 101.
