ABS switch kills speedometer.

So I spliced into the white/yellow wire in the ABS connector. Added in a switch and can now turn the ABS off and on as needed.
Problem is, when the ABS is off, the speedometer goes to 0.
What did I do wrong.
'17 wee.

I would imagine the speedo gets its reading from the ABS sensors, like the Vee2 does, rather than having a separate speedo sensor.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

So that is just the way it goes then?
Guess I don't really need to know how fast I'm going off road anyway.

It's an educated guess. I don't have a wiring diagram on the '17. I was thinking the same thing. If the place you're on is so gnarly you want to turn ABS off, you don't need a speedo.
chicago likes this.

some have installed a bicycle speedometer and of course many use gps.
that way you could follow a scroll sheet etc.

I wonder

Can you cut power to the ABS control box (the one with the pumps) rather than cutting the speed input line? Presumably that would preserve your speedo. Probably need a heftier switch.

I think I could splice into either the control line or the motor line for the ABS and kill it with the switch. Somehow I got it in my head the white with yellow (RWS) was the one I wanted. Obviously it works, but not the best choice.

I think I will follow the same philosophy as seen in the "Proper ABS on/off switch" post.
See what wire comes from the 10 amp ignition fuse to the ABS connector.

For my ABS management, I use the Eastern Beaver plug to plug with off/on switch mounted on the dash. My speedo (2015 650XT) works fine with / without ABS functioning. I do have to turn the engine off / on to rearm the ABS after completing a dirt section.

Does the odometer also stop working when the speedo switches off?

I didn't verify the odometer readings did not progress, but the trip miles do not progress.
