Wink FI

Throwed the first F1 at Bike Week in March. Contributed it to the heat maybe. Fuel pump not humming, 5 minutes later fired right up. Sporadic once or so per week thereafter. Couple weeks ago, F1, turn the switch off, on two or three times fire right up, then more and more F1's. Cleaned kill switch, didn't help. Took it to the nearest stealership, they clean and lube various connectors, 240.00$. WE can' duplicate the condition, they say. Next step new fuel pump and or wiring harness and 800.00$ just for the pump. No thanks. Bring the 110,000 mile '08 DL1000 back home, squirt some PBBLASTER in the ignition switch and hasn't thrown the dreaded F1 since. If yours does the dirty F1 try the PBBLASTER first, worked for me.

If you get an FI, check for yourself what the problem is. See FAQ: Dealer Mode & FI Error Codes

A new fuel pump is very rarely needed. The usual fuel pump problems are a clogged high pressure filter or a wiring/connector/switch problem. A filter problem can be bypassed. See External Fuel Filter modification

Dis ain't my first fuel pump rodeo, 3yrs ago coming back from Sturgis, late Sept, after all the fanatics had polished and put away for the winter, going into Memphis top speed 80. Get home local dealer, need a new fuel pump, 800$. Fixed that problem. This F1 was different, you couldn't hear the pump energizing. But after some hard key setting and PBBLASTER, I'm just saying.... do you think my rear chain oiler maybe working too good, ha just kidding. Thanks for all your helps GREYWOLF.

I'm just saying the need for an entire new fuel pump is very rare. The high pressure fuel filter or, rarely, the pump motor are normally replaceable. Also, the only part of the fuel pump system that will create an FI is the fuel pump relay, which is not part of the fuel pump at all.

Code will likely be a C42. Which is the theft deterrent system in the DL 1000 ignition switch not seeing the correct resistance. Flipping the ignition switch off/on till you hear the fuel pump energize or flipping the kill switch off/on usually gets you going. Common problem. Cleaning the switch sometimes helps. Replacing the entire ignition switch is a fix but not all that simple and you will then need two different keys. Someone supposedly figured out how to install an inline resistor to make it work, but I don't know where that info is at the moment.

Nothing to do with the fuel pump. They are pretty much going to work, or never work again. If the ECU doesn't power the fuel pump because it doesn't see the correct value of the theft deterrent resistor, then your symptoms appear.

I hadn't though of that. A number of things not related to the fuel pump will result in the fuel pump not running. The kill switch or side stand switch not in the correct position or malfunctioning will do that for example. Just about any FI code that prevents the engine from running at all may be involved. That's why determining the code is the first thing to do when an FI appears.
