Worth of the 650?

Anyone bought or sold a 12 and up 650 lately? It seems like there are a few listed lately and the prices are all over the place. From low to where I would ever consider getting rid of mine, to high enough for me to consider it.

I'm getting the impression that if you want to sell one now, you are going to have to about give it away.

We frown upon these type of threads, but since you aren't looking to sell yours "yet", I will allow it to stay. Its all about what a person is willing to pay, and yes these bikes don't hold their value for squat.

So I can't comment on that model biek specifically but I will say prices fluctuate with the time of the year. As a general rule, the best time to buy is in the fall. People did their summer ride (maybe) and decided that the never use their bike. Or they want the cash for Xmas. Or they don't want to prep it for winter (not an issue where I live)

The best time to sell is in the spring. People want to buy bikes as the weather warms up and all the bike rallies start happening.

Summer is usually pretty bad. People are broke from their summer vacations. Kids school tuitions are due. People have less disposable income to buy stuff

Sorry about that...I don't have any intentions of selling. I do however notice when I see one for sale, and have been wondering if anyone is selling them for anywhere near what they are asking.

As a rule, I don't buy anything with a motor new. I would just as soon let someone else take the initial hit on depreciation. I broke my own rule for the V-Strom though. And, I'll probably buy new for my next bike...whenever and whatever that may be.

The only way to get a halfway realistic picture is looking at e-bay completed auctions. That are true sales.

Many prices asked for are totally unrealistic. Just watch here if someone really needs to get rid of their ride there is often a dramatic cutting of price. They might have been better of selling on craigslist since most people coming here have a bike. Dealer pricing is a separate matter, I never watch those.

Time of year obviously, at least in the north east, is important. I bought mine for a steal last February on e-bay. Nobody was even looking and bidding on it, just 2 bids!

I always check NADA and KBB. You can do the craigslist thing too. SearchTempest: Search all of Craigslist nationwide & more

When I get done with my bikes they usually aren't worth a lot.
Asking here is leaving oneself open to the usual sort of ragging.
Some folks really want to sell their bikes and offer low. Others mistakenly think their bike is gold and want to charge the big bucks.
When doing the KBB thing look at trade in prices vs dealer sale price.

I observed the same thing when I recently considered selling mine. When I realized what I'd have to let it go for, I changed my mind. Glad I did too. Just glad I'm not in a situation where I need to sell it.

When I bought mine in 2013, there wasn't much in the way of competition other than the Versys 650 which was kind of strange looking. Since then, the Versys 650 got some nice updates, along with the addition of Versys 1000, NC700X, CBR500X, AT and FJ09. A lot more competition in the arena.

It's not just a VStrom thing. It seems all bikes are suffering the same fate.

If I had the money, I'd be scarfing up on some good used bikes right now.

Bike sales have dropped nearly in half since the peak in 2006 of around 700K per year to 370K in 2016. Unreal

I just recently traded my 2011 Harley Heritage (with lots of farkles) for a 2014 Vee Adventure. Before making the trade I did a lot of research trying to determine the Harley's worth. NADA and KBB showed pricing much higher than the bikes were actually selling for on Ebay! I was really shocked to see what some were bringing.
Long story short, I am happy with my Vee!

Trying to determine the value of a bike by looking at "asking price" is almost impossible. You can ask what you want but its only worth what someone will pay for it.

Indeed. The 2011 Wee I just bought for $3500 was originally listed at $5500 on Facebook and Craigslist. I got the distinct impression the guy needed money for some other expense, like a cruise. He was pretty anxious to get the deal done at the end.
