2012 or 2017 Vstrom 650?

Hi, all.

Lots of knowledgeable people here, so I thought I would pick your brains.

I have been looking at a number of bikes, and have decided on the Vstrom 650. The two options I am looking at is buying new, or a 2012 version. The 2012 only has 18 000 km on it, and has the hand guards, skid plate, engine guards, fresh tires, and has the stator recall done on it. I could pick it up for $5000 Canadian.

On the other hand, I can get a brand new unit for $8500 with a 5 year warranty. It isn't the XT model, but I really don't need the extra bits.

Is the newer version worth spending the extra bucks on? Will I always be wishing I grabbed the newest version if I go with the 2012?

Thanks for the advice!

Regarding 2012 I would say the price is to high. If you go to Kijiji Ottawa there is 2013 with 7000km and the guy is asking $5400. Pretty sure you can get it for $5000 or even less than that. New one? Why would you want to spend twice much on the new one if you can get used one with very low mileage for half of the money. You can always buy new model (used) next year or so. Plus-if for any reason you don't like the bike perhaps you can get your money back selling the used one but never if you buy new one.

The Stroms are so reliable that you probably won't need a warranty. Ditto on what Rick said about cost vs. resale. Also, you will want/need to spend money on gear and "farkles" [strom-speak for accessories] for convenience and comfort. (Windscreen, bar risers ...)

First farkle - Motech center stand
Suzuki handguards
Augustus Wind Deflectors
Fat, foamy grips
Givi AirFlow windscreen

Hyde Racing skid plate
Adventuretech kickstand foot, fork brace, fender raising kit, and peg lowering kit.
Zita 26mm up / 20mm back risers
Sit and Fly Seat Net

And if the warranty is important for you go again on Kijiji and check 2015 with 4000km which perhaps you can buy for $6000 or less ( guy is asking $6400). Comes with 5 years remaining warranty

I pulled the trigger on the 2012 and I pick it up tomorrow. I got an even better deal than I hoped, and some additional extras were added in. Maybe not the best deal around, but this bike has been very well taken care of.

Thanks for the information you have supplied. What you said was basically what was going through my mind, but the lure of a brand new machine can muddy the waters sometimes! I am happy to get a very nice bike for half what I would pay new.

Thanks again for the advice. It was exactly what I needed to hear.

Yeah, it seems that I couldn't go too wrong with any year of vstrom. I am looking forward to it.

Nope. I have had a couple of KLRs, and DRZ400, and a KLX250 (and a bunch of dirt bikes). I normally was mostly off road, but an injury has stopped me from going too hard in the dirt. I think the Vstrom will fit me just fine.

Congratulations on your new toy. You'll find the Wee is a capable sport-tourer with some "off-road" capability. Enjoy and welcome to the club.
