I have been defarkled

During follow up x-rays after my motorcycle accident in July, the doctor found some issues with my emergency room surgery.

So, I had to have a second surgery yesterday on my wrist. The Orthopedic surgeon removed 2 broken screw heads, one loose screw, the titanium plate and a bone fragment from my wrist. The doctor said the wrist had healed enough to not need replacement hardware installed. I should know in a couple months if it will be good to go, but he was optimistic for a good outcome. During surgery, the nerve block on my arm quit working and they had to hit me with Dilaudid. Then in recovery they whacked me again with intravenous Diluadid. Then a horse pill of Percocet......needless to say it was very entertaining. It has out-patient, so I went home afterwards. Wifey said I might have gotten a little out of sorts....I thought next month was July. I guess I am not a winter person.

Off the bike a month or so. I can ride the ATV though, but only around home.

Major meds for sure. I have never had a nerve block. It was pretty cool. They Propophol you first, then give you shocks to the arm to find where the nerve is. Then a big needle in the armpit and shoulder and presto....dead arm. I was awake during this, fully aware, but was in a psychedelic haze and could not see anything but weird changing colors. I could hear the anesthesia doctor and nurse talking. Never felt the shots but have two bruises where they stuck me.

It was around 10PM last night before my arm muscles would work. I had complete feeling in my hand, I just could not use my right arm at all. It was paralyzed, but still hurt a lot.

Today is much better. I believe I will stop pain killers after tonight.

Pat fixed my post count for me........THANK YOU PAT!

Had a similar experience with my major shoulder surgery, actually eerily similar to what you describe.

I was going to push like and then realised that I could not wish such an adventure on anyone. Take it easy as we don't bounce like we used to and I hope it all works out down the track.

I was scared before my hand redux, I must admit. With the wreck and first trip through the ER, I was drugged up and just remember fragments of the first two days. This time I got to mull it over before hand. Pleasantly enough, it was pretty much pain-free until the recovery room. Easier than a tooth filling for sure.

When I came to in recovery, the nurse immediately asked me if I was in pain. She asked me how bad it hurt on a 1 to 10 scale, I said 7. Probably should have said 4 if I was honest, because the Diluadid knocked me for a loop. Today I am typing with some of my fingers. Good grip strength. Good feeling in finger tips. I am pleased. Doc was pleased. I have very little pain. Basically just an 8 inch incision to hurt now, since they were not doing carpentry work on me this time.

I still consider myself very lucky. The doctor said injuries of the severity I sustained typically have nerve damage. I could feel a feather on my fingertips in the recovery room.

I had a nerve block in the back of my shoulder before they screwed and plated my collar bone. When the surgery was over, it was very hilarious because my complete left arm was numb and I couldn't do anything with it. I never realized how much your arm weights when it's completely dead (numb)

beware of the nasty stuck bowels that percocet will lay upon you! I had a groin hernia repair this summer, and wish I have foregone the pain killer. Constipation with a 4" incision in your groin is not a happy combo. Trying to pass a concrete coffee can through your sphincter is no joy and no easier even if the incision is in your hand.

I hope you have a speedy recovery,
