Newbee questions

So I'm so new to adventure bike that I don't even have one yet. I've narrowed it down a V Strom just not sure what size yet. My question is this... Is there a particular year I should look at? I know there will be different opinions on this. I just don't know if there is something like "Never buy a VS 1000 made before 2009" or something like that.

There don't seem to be any bad years. 2007+ DL650 offered ABS as an option (I had one). 2008 DL650 offered more electrical output. 2012+ Dl650A is a better 650 in every way. 2014+ DL1000A is a better bike in every way. Other than that, the main differences between the years is the choice of colors.

What are you looking to do with e bike? Personally I don't think there are any "bad" years just some "better" years.

When I was interested in selling my cruiser to buy aV- strom, I decided to buy an earlier model to see how much I liked it. I bought an 04 650 for $3k and rode it for a year or so. I really liked it but got interested in the new Vee2 and traded up. I've had the V2 for a year and a half now and love it.
So my approach was to buy cheap to give it a try and I was sold on the V-Stroms. Good luck!

I did as Vaseface
Started out on a used "07" without ABS. Really liked the bike.
Sold the "07" and bought a new "13". I really really like the V2.

The changes are subtle and three years out I can't even tell you what they are anymore.
But the changes do make it a better bike.

Now that the "17" are out there should be some great deals on the "12/16" bikes.

I have a large cruiser and wanted to try out ADV without breaking the bank. Was getting some work done at the dealer on my Vulcan a the dealer earlier this year and saw they had a 2014 leftover 650 set up for adventure riding with an aftermarket seat, knobbie tires and saddle bags. They gave me a good price so it followed me home. This bike is the first one out of the garage, compared to the Vulcan it is light and easy to handle. It took me a few rides but the seat height is not an issue.

i've been a strommer only since i joined, having bought a new 2015 650.

as to "what's the best" among the various V's? i was talking to a couple of HD riders the other day. we agreed that most of the bikes manufactured today are pretty good pieces of machinery. oh, sure, each will manifest a quirk or two, but by and large the mc industry offers a gazillion good choices.

ride often, be safe, check in once in a while...LOL.

The general consensus is that the first generation VEE (1000) is less desirable for most compared to the first generation WEE (650), which I have, a 2004. The VEE is heavier, the engine is more powerful but less refined and in practical riding conditions the WEE is quite adequate. I think the WEE outsold the VEE 2:1. There are many improvements that many make to make these bikes their own. I have done so and was pondering to upgrade and in the end gave up since the resale value is way less than the value to me. So I put over 10k on it this year instead.

The first generation Wee got upgraded to dual sparks (I think 2007) = better fuel economy and then ABS. If you just want to try for a low budget get an older well farkeld WEE for 2-3K (30-50k miles).

If you have more to spend get a newer WEE with ABS, even more get the 2nd generation WEE (+2012).

If you need 1000 cc power and low budget, get the VEE. If you need the power and want a great bike, get the 2nd generation VEE. Better in every respect than the 1st generation.

Edit: As others stated, there are no bad years. Just an older bike is more likely to have some issues than a new one. Beware of older bikes with real low mileage. They may have sat for long time and may have fuel system corrosion/ deposit issues if not properly protected. At least check that out very carefully.

My thoughts on the Vee vs Wee: I'd like a little more power from my 1000, so for the type of riding I do, commuting 95% freeway (or at least roads with a speed limit of 55+), the Wee wouldn't cut it powerwise (I say this learning from experience after buying my first and only new bike, a '88 Hawk GT that was a blast to ride, just not with all my friends who had bought FZR600's).

Going from there, buy whatever your budget will allow. Go newer and spend a little more $$$, or if you're undecided, get an older model for a couple grand and see how you like it. FWIW, I picked mine up for $3000 and 35K miles. It came with Two Brothers pipes, a PC, gel seat, skidplate and full Zook luggage. Sold the luggage for $500 in a day and the mods were all stuff I would've done so I think I got a pretty good deal.
