Finding a used Vstrom fly in the ointment here in Mexico

Hi Guys, this question is going out to those of you who have or have had both the 650 and 1000 Vstroms.

I recently liquidated in Canada and moved to Mexico to live full time here. And sadly my bikes were also sold. Now I'm looking to obtain another bike cuz I just can't live without one. I've got a little Honda Supercub 110cc for around town but it's dangerous on the hwy because of it's 45mph top speed. I had bought a new Vstrom 650 in 2013. I've had big bikes like my Harley Davidson Road Glide, to in between bikes like my R1200-GS to my Connie and KLR. The KLR I did a 14,000 km. return ride up to the north shore of Alaska and back. Great bike but lots of vibration which was hard on my hands because of carpul tunnel sydrome. When I got the Vstrom almost all of that went away because the bike was so much smoother. Strange thing was I found the Wee easier to ride than the KLR especially at parking lot speeds - it was just so much more nimble and better balanced not being so top heavy. I loved the Wee but because of the move ended up selling it with only 600kms on it right after I did my first oil change on it. A very sad moment.

So here I am in Mexico looking to purchase a pre owned Wee but finding them difficult to find in the state of Jalisco at this moment. There are however quite a few 1000cc Vstroms available at higher price mind you but they are available.

My question is; for those of you who have had both sizes of Vstrom. Is there any reason to choose one over the other, other than power? Is the handling equal between the two? Suspension etc? I've not ridden the 1000 and down here dealers won't let you take them out for a test ride so I'm hoping you guys can give me enough insight to choose. I had originally had my sights on another 650 cuz I loved the one I had so much but now with the surplus of 1000 cc'ers here I'm considering the 1000 also. What say you and why? I've only ridden a 1000 not owned.
The 650 is spec'd to run on regular gas, has 20-30% more range than the 1000 and the engine doesn't feel like a Russian tractor.

The newer 1000 has better brakes and traction control but I'd be concerned that the fuel thing is why the 1000's are so available there.

I have a Vee and the mileage thing is way overstated in most cases. I usually get 45-50 real MPG. And it runs strong. A 4 degree advancer helps, I'm convinced of that. Stock, you can run ordinary regular. Probably can do it with the advancer too. Just don't lug it. The 650s are smoother and lighter feeling. And they actually are a few pounds lighter. they make better bikes in the dirt. I've done 16 hour days on my Vee and I'm now 72 years old. It can't be too uncomfortable. I wouldn't trade, but lots of guys have gone to the Wee from the Vee. And the other way around. Depends on the rider, I guess. Buy a Vee. If you don't like it, get a Wee when one is available and sell the Vee. Life is short. Have fun when you can.

Tractor? haha, nah you gotta be riding a BMW Boxer for that, good engines but they even shift like a tractor.

I'm not sure I want anything to do with traction control, so much of what you need to do in the dirt requires slippage to make it happen. It's kinda like ABS for me too, don't really want it. I hate relinquishing control over my vehicle no matter what it is.

Can the TC and ABS be turned off for when you are riding in the dirt/gravel?

Bobby, with my 13 I would consistently push 70mpg with it (imperial gallon not US).

I'm not familiar with this advancer you mentioned. Aftermarket? Link?

I worked for years as a Barber and developed carpel tunnel syndrome in both hands as a result of all the scissor/clipper work over the years. It's worse in my throttle hand but vibration definitely affects it as well as a stiff throttle force required to twist. When I got off my Connie which had the stiffer throttle and off the KLR which had lots of vibes and got onto my 2013 Weestrom I saw a huge difference in the way my hands felt at the end of a long day. Smooooth is good.

You mentioned the Wee being the better dirt machine. I'd like the this Vstrom to be my only bike if I can get away with it. Here in Mexico the mountains are riddled with dirt/gravel roads so I suspect a good percentage of my riding will be off pavement......perhaps 15-20%???? I don't know just yet as until I get a bike and start exploring with some of the local ADV boys I won't really know for sure whether or not I'll require a second smaller bike for the dirt. Right now I think from what you guys have said that my decision will lean toward the Wee because of the dirt factor. But still open to the 1000 too. It's a bitch when you get stuck on the fence lol.

The V2 comes with a TC switch but you will need to fit your own ABS switch, many of us have done it and it quite easy to do.

The advancer is through Factory Pro: Producers of the EC997 Low Inertia Eddy Current Dynamometer Series and Quality MC performance products. It's $89.00. It comes with a tool to help you remove your rotor/flywheel on the left side of your engine. The advancer itself is just an offset key that rotates the flywheel 4 degrees forward. It's worth about $1.00. However, making one would be a challenge. So $89 already done with a tool I saw as a good investment.

I think that the added weight of the Vee makes the Wee and its smooth engine a good one for the dirt. Interestingly, at VStrom gatherings I have seen a lot of Vees with knobbies, so people do use them in the dirt. If you are 6'2" or so tall, then it could be a reasonable dirt bike for fire roads and reasonable two-track. I'm too small and short to even consider it. The power of the Vee would not be helpful in the dirt.

I don't think I am overstating the milage - or more importantly the range - difference. I can rely on 440k's from a tank no matter what riding I'm doing, taking it slow on the backroads it's pushing 600.

The main point is the OP lives in Mexico, things may have changed but stories were that fuel quality used to be very unreliable there.

I'm not saying that the 1000 is a bad choice everywhere, just that if the fuel quality in Mexico is still a bit dubious the 650 is likely to run better than the 1000.

If you are tall and strong or a very good rider the 1000 is fine on dirt. Around here though the 650 is just as fast on dirt (Speed is limited by unexpected high speed wildlife) and a bit easier to ride. Smoother throttle response lighter and gets better drive.

The range thing is about the only issue I personally have with the new 1000, in the rural areas fuel choices are usually E10 or 95 anyway and I try and avoid the E10 if I can even on the 650.

Hi Pete, the mileage you quote above is that with the Vee or the Wee?

Fuel in Mexico may have been a concern decades ago but I've lived here off and on for the last 6.5 years and never had a problem. There are new filling stations everywhere it seems
