Coolant reservoir

Hello fellow STs.
I have (silly question) what is the function of the small hose that connects to the top portion of the coolant reservouir? It's connected together with the hose on the bottom of the tank and from there it runs to the cooling system. I think it may be vent only, but not sure. Manual calls it fill hose. I ask because, I rode like 20 miles after working on the bike and didn't realize I didn't plug in the hose.

It is a combination vent and overflow hose. It breaks the air tightness that would otherwise exist and allows excess coolant to leave in cases of overfilling. It can also be used as a fill hose if you break the tee connection and add coolant with a syringe. I did that once. The tee connection meets the vent hose from the fuel filler well so both can vent to a single hose exiting near the exhaust pipe.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
