Rode 2015 650 XT and a 2011 today - dilemna

I've been trying to pick a bike worthy of reliable long distance dual-sport with an eye on Alaska next summer. I have an RT that I love but feel something else is probably a little more appropriate. So I rode a brand new 2015 XT - it was quite a pleasant surprise in most ways except... Didn't fit me well, hips started bothering me after 15 minutes; and the brakes were mediocre. HOWEVER I then for kicks rode a modified 2011 and what a wake up call to what mods can do! Has Nissen brakes, not sure what aftermarket suspension, different bars, heated grips, hear indicator, exhaust, Sargent seat (really wide but put me farther back in a much more comfortable position). SW MoTech panniers and top box. Aftermarket shield, not sure what but MUCH better than stock. The thing was great! 15,000 miles that I expect were kind of hard miles. Asking $6000. I'm thinking too old, kind of beat but ran great and the seat made it fit me! I'm confused - if anyone wants to chime in I'm all ears.

Try negotiating on the used one, if it fits and rides better plus it's already farkled up then it's a no brainer. You've got nothing to loose to try and negotiate. Seems like he's asking higher than dealer prices for a private sale. Unfortunately the farkles don't add much value on the used market. 25 to 50 cents on the dollar max for all the extras.

Thanks for the input - it's actually at the same dealer as the new '15. So I'm sure I could get a significant price break. This bugs me just a bit that the previous owner, who obviously loved his bike to put who know how many $ into it, has had it so taken apart but it does all seem well done. He traded for a Triumph Tiger btw. So 15,000 petty hard miles doesn't seem too bad to you guys?

Are there lots of 6'2" 210 pound guys out there riding these? Clearly I would need to change peg / seat / bar config if I was to get Storm other than the modded one, I definitely liked the newer engine better.

6'2" 210lbs is absolutely no problem for a wee or wee2. Does the 2011 have ABS? I wouldn't assume the bike has "hard miles" on it unless you have reason to believe proper maintenance wasn't done regularly. The price is high, $5k would be closer.

+1 to all this, especially the price.

I just paid $8k for a 2015 XT that I had to wait for them to assemble. I put the first 25 miles on it during the test ride. The '15's came with Suzuki branded SW Motech panniers and crash bars.

The farkles may not be worth much used, but if they are what you like, they'll save you a few thousand $.

I like my bike, but a windscreen replacement is an immediate must - IMO. As is a skid plate if you are going to ride any where but pavement, and panniers if you are going to carry anything bigger than a cell phone and ... You get the idea.

I'd check Cycletrader. I drove 100 miles and saved $1500.

Fat, foamy grips
Givi AirFlow windscreen

JD Astar 1260 lumen LED tail light bulb

Hyde Racing skid plate
Adventuretech kickstand foot, fork brace, fender raising kit, and peg lowering kit.
Zita 26mm up / 20mm back risers

I appreciate the input guys. I too can get a 2015 XT brand new for $8k, the 2011 for likely around $5k all loaded up, there is also a 2013 private sale stock, 4700 miles for $4,800 asking, likely $4500. I will say this - all these prices seem cheap for the quality of this bike!

I'm reluctant on the '11 because it appears to have spent a lot of time in significant dirt, and to have been wrenched on a fair amount - that's why I refer to it as possibly "hard" miles. Even with all the farkles my inclination is to avoid the possibility of taking on a problem child, I need a bike that's tour-worthy. It might or might not be worth a chance?

210lbs isn't a problem, I'm just over that. But you may find it a bit cramped after a few hrs. You can get a footpeg lowering kit and replace the saddle foam with 1" thicker foam.

Yes I was cramped. Made my hips sting a bit after 45 minutes or so. I was ready to write off the wee2 as an option for me until I rode the used one with the Sargent seat, a better windshield, off-road type bars - not sure if pegs were stock location or not. But I was amazed that I was completely comfortable . So I feel like I could get there without too much financial pain if I bought a new one, seat being the most expensive item and thinking I want something besides a Sargent.

Tough call.....how deep is your wallet?

15K on the 2011 is nothing and it's ready to ride. You can easily spend another $1500 customizing a new XT (Adcox seat, peg lowering kit, gps shelf, Rox risers, Givi Airflow windshield, EB headlight & abs harnesses, centerstand & skid plate). But, if you do all that you will be pleased ...it's a great bike
