Question Mt washington, nh

After doing a tour that took me to Vermont, Quebec City, Bar Harbor, Maine, New Hampshire and back to Vermont before heading back to NJ have decided for Labor Day weekend to do a 3 day trip to Mt. Washington via the Kankamagus Highway which we used to cut through NH on way back. Any suggestions or pointers on the Mt. Washington road anybody that has been there can give? I ran into a fellow bunch of bikers at one of the Vermont hotels and he gave me a story of his Gold Wing overheating on the climb. The You Tube videos show it as not that bad a road when the weather is nice which can be very fickle.

There no real running issues for our bikes heading up Mt. Washington. The only concerns I had was cars making wide turns on some of the hairpin turns.

Lots of nice roads in the area!

My Opinion:
Vee or V= DL1000 before 2014
Vee2 or V2 = DL1000 2015 to 2019
Vee3 or V3 = DL1050 2020 to?

My Stroms:
2006 DL650: 202,000 km 125,500 miles, Sold
2012 DL650 139,500+ km, 86,700+ miles. Sold
2015 DL1000 New July 2015 205,000+ km, 127,000+ miles.

This can help preventing from cars pulling out in front of you (SMIDSY)

Check the weather - they won't let you up if it's bad - windy.

Figure 8 mile climb in first gear unless traffic is very light

Quote:

Too much fun but man it is steep with hairpins....mostly first gear all 8 miles. Pics later.
Too many slow drivers and no passing - dirt portion was no issue but would be in the rain ....slick.

It is nothing like the picture shown - far narrower and steep.

Mount Washington in New Hampshire ...highest in the east.

Great shot of Kenz….air was invigorating and no wind to speak of at all. Very narrow steep climb with traffic in both directions and really only 1.5 lanes. Rarely out of first gear on the way up due to nervous cage drivers - the one in front of us stopped once on a very nasty grade ….I slid back down a foot on pavement !!!!. I had a few choice words….but it was very narrow when traffic in both directions and the fall off looked extreme tho really little risk.

Wild road up but too much traffic today to make use of it.
What we had to deal with in front of us….freaked drivers and you can see on the dirt section how narrow. Some drivers just HAD to drive in the middle....
this covers it

You can only get a sense of how steep from the people walking up ...most of the road was that angle. Fortunately flat spots to park.

No wind at all today....
but a welcome 10 degrees cooler at the summit.

Had a marginal coffee at the top - a bit of Kenz cinnamon whiskey perked it up.

look to the summit before you enter the AutoRoad, if ya can't see it, don't bother wasting your time or money, that means it will be wet and dreary at the summit and you won't be able to see past your nose

weather at the summit of Mt Washington is only slightly more hospitable than the south pole

Good advice.
And have patience.
Labor day weekend, um, the Kanc and auto road will not be quiet.

I've been up 3 times in my truck but only made it to the top once, they turned us around because the weather suddenly changed...the last time it was like driving in a hurricane..lol..for real..couldn't imagine being on my motorcycle that day but I probably wouldn'thave attempted it on the bike those days anyway.
The road is so tight in some places I had to fold my mirrors in for another pickup pass in the opposite direction but I am driving an f250 and she's not petite.
I know they have a few motorcycle only days....that's when I would go for sure but I would imagine that could be caotic as well....as far as labor day weekend goes I would think you'd be feet on the pavement most of the time unless you got there at the opening bell...
Good luck and be safe....let's see some pictures and a report...

Was just here in the last 2 weeks. What amazing views and the weather was perfect! With the wind gusts it was touching the 30's. You definitely want to add some clothing before making the climb.

I went up in my truck. had to share the road sometimes with the guys warming up for the timed run to the summit. It was the end of the day, at top there were only 2 cars when we got there. Then the clouds closed in. The ride back down was peaceful, no traffic. We were however followed down by the ranger. He didn't push us and allowed us to stop and take pictures.

I had a very pleasurable experience with the staff top and bottom. Enjoy it, but check the live webcams before heading in. May need to schedule a day or two in the area to get a good weather on top. Although, it is pretty awesome in the clouds. There was a 25 degree difference on our trip.

I would like to make that climb on two wheels, just need to schedule it with the Mrs.

Whatever you choose to ride, enjoy it and be open to new experiences.
