Rule #57: Do Not Ride Behind Morons

Quote:
You know better than to ride around trucks any longer than absolutely necessary, but a far more insidious danger is the unprofessional vacationista whose load-securing skills are often primitive. Whenever you see somebody towing a boat, a trailer, or especially a boat or a trailer with a bunch of other junk strapped onto or around it, expect this to happen and ride accordingly, i.e., nowhere around it. Especially not behind it. That goes double for the bane of Southern California motorists, the gardening truck, which is often a rolling obstacle course of weedwackers, rakes, and aluminum ladders yearning to break free. If you see someone holding a mattress to his roof with one hand out the window, know you’ll be the one most likely to take a nap if you’re silly enough to ride behind him

This rider got back up; we wish him a speedy recovery.

Bungee style of retainers should be banned from the market.

Except that 92.6% of all drivers are morons, so that doesn't leave much to work with.

Yeah I agree! Plus most people don't think about others that will be on the road. So they just quickly load their stuff up and go.

3 seconds separation is and has been recommended by driving schools for decades, but most people ignore it and tailgate, I have no sympathy

I have had plenty of crap come flying off cars & trucks in front of me, and never had a problem avoiding it

A couple of major highways go to the ocean in my area. If you don't think it can happen, just take a look at all the life preservers, cooler tops, beach toys, blankets, gas tanks, spare tires, umbrellas and various trailer parts that are on the side of the road every weekend.

Or..

Next to them, or in front of them. Of course, that precludes using any public road, so whatta ya gonna do? Problem with debris on the road is the unpredictable response from other drivers, who often change lanes rapidly, without warning, usually without looking. Or the fine folks that pretty much stop on the road (Interstate or not, doesn't matter). Unfortunately the 3 second following distance is sometimes inadequate, especially if the cage in front shreds the debris and launches it air-born, which I've seen on more than one occasion.
