Oil Smoke after a lay down

Question for the collective:

I layed my bike over during an off-road trip on a Jeep trail last night, and after I got the bike upright and started it up, it belched an enormous amount of oil smoke. Continued to do so most of the way home. I babied it and only ran the engine when I needed to, and never above 3k RPM. There was evidence of oil leaking from the joints in the exhaust system, so my theory is that oil may have seeped past the rings, and out an open exhaust valve into the exhaust system while it was leaning downhill. The drop was not violent, and there is no evidence of damage or oil leaks anywhere on the engine block. Also, the power output and engine sound were completely normal.

Has anyone experienced this before and am I right to assume that it simply due to oil getting into the cylinder/exhaust while it was laying down, and not a major mechanical issue? If that is the case, what should I do to clean the cylinder so it is not gunked up with sludge?

Actually oil most likely got into the air box. The crankcase vent hose goes into there and during a lay-down oil will frequently drain into it. It will go away after a while or you can go to the effort to mop it all out.

You will want to check the air filter also. If you had alot of oil get in, the filter may be soaked.
