Question ABS, are you waiting for it?

I have seen many posts here about buyers looking high and low for a new or used ABS model Strom. If I could snap my fingers and turn my '06 non-ABS Wee into ABS I would do it in a heartbeat, but I can't imagine wanting ABS bad enough to put off buying a bike or paying MSRP to get one.

It's all a personal decision and it is definitely a safety feature, but why not just find a nice non-ABS new or used and ride it for a couple of years. Then when the supply goes up or some used ABS bikes start showing up, sell the non-ABS and get the ABS bike. In the next 5 years or so, I'll bet most foreign bikes will be come standard or at the least optional with ABS. Why wait through the riding season for an ABS when a non-ABS could provide you with fun right now?

Now, if you already have a suitable bike and are just wanting to add to the stable or replace your current bike, I understand the wait for what you want. Otherwise, just buy a non-ABS and join the happy ranks of Weestrom riders.

I agonized over the issue, considered buying a used wee, but decided if I was getting a new(ish) bike, I wanted it to have ABS. I found a leftover '07 ABS about 200 miles from me, for $7,600. I felt it was worth the extra cost to get the perceived safety increase. If I hadn't found mine, I might have gone for non-ABS, but I've been very happy with what I've got.

Yes , Still waiting after deposit put in February 2,2008, but the dealer still can't give me a realistic time frame for delivery.
My mindset is to wait it out for the ABS. I have taken the MSF course, read every post on this site, looked at all the farkles and how to install them, priced helmets, jackets, etc, but I still don't have the bike. Dealer has 3 non- ABS on the floor, but I haven't asked about the price because I simply do not want one. That may change I suppose, but I am an old man and I want what I want. Has anyone seen ABS east of the Mississippi? I could really use some ammunition to get back to the dealer with. And NO, I am not going to shoot him with it.

My only experience with ABS is with cages. I know it works on slippery stuff and allows you to steer with wheels that aren't locked up. If I am ever in the market for a new bike ABS will be a priority whether it be standard equipment or optional.

I wanted ABS but with none around, bought a used 05 last year.

I was thinking about finding an 08 ABS but two things happened which changed my mind. A fellow at work has an 07 BMW 1200GS with a problem with the ABS despite several dealer visits. And I spent a day at the Penguin school really wringing out th brakes, making me a lot more confident with the stock setup.

While there aren't reports of reliability problems with the V-Strom ABS, and the weight difference is only 10 lbs, I can live with the standard brakes, which are a lot better than my past bikes.

Still waiting...

Put a deposit on one 3/15. Dealer assures me that it's in the warehouse awaiting 'release' from Suzuki.

If it doesn't materialize, I'm going to keep my SV for another year.

I did pick up a non-ABS and rode it for a couple years. It was my 04 DL650, which I purchased new then.

I waited 7 months for the ABS bike to arrive, and was proactive about finding one. I flew several states away and rode one home when I did.

I stumbled on one today .... was still procrastinating on what to buy for first time rider ..persnickety old guy as well... took MSF course late last summer, and failed to get a bike or my first ride in before the weather turned ....... had been reading how tough these are to find ...... checked dealer inventory on line at State 8 in Cleveland, they had one ....... went in this morning, had a sale sign on it.....talked to the manager, turns out it was just targeted for a dealer trade in Maine somewhere ...... he cut me a deal ($300 off) ........ I took it ....... I consider myself lucky .......... 1st week of June ......... we will see if I can actually ride this thing!

Good luck in your efforts ! DO love that flat black !
