Longish Trip and Lubin'

Hi Group,
Headed on a 4 day 1200-1500 mile ride this weekend. I was planning on cleaning the chain prior to leaving but i was interested in thought about how often you clean the chain on the road. I'm new to chain maintenance as this is my first chain bike. In the garage i clean it with a solvent then apply the lube. How do folks clean the chain on the road? Same as in the garage or just lube? Do i need to worry about it on this trip?

Thanks,
Jon

I clean every 10k or so, lube every other gas stop. Never clean the chain on a trip unless its to a buddies house. There is no need to overclean your chain. Get a good lube like the teflon which doesn't attract dirt.

as usual, graywolf is right. Throw a can of spray lube in your luggage and you'll be fine. There are even some "mini cans" that work very well for a short trip like this.

+1 Dupont teflon spray. I blasted holy crap outta my chain on my long trip every 500ish miles. Spray full force cleans chain and lubes at same time. The overspray on the tire is minimal if you do it right.... just don't do it in a well-visited public place... puddles of lube don't please many business owners.

Be careful not to blast that lube right onto your back brake.

I have heard that Dupont makes a mini bottle (maybe 3oz) of the Teflon Multi-Use, but instead of spray it is liquid, drip-on. I think this would be perfect if space is an issue and you don't want to carry the big spray can.

I wonder how thick it is.. I'm thinking we can modify the lubeman to disperse teflon multi-use.....

I like to put my lube in a double plastic bag just in can the lid does pop off for some reason. Don't want that mess in you box or bag.
I lube up on trips at gas stations. Just like grey wolf said every other stop. They also have lots of paper towels you can use to make a minimal mess. Plus, if you do make a little mess, IT'S A GAS STATION. They have more oil, gas, diesel, and whatever else on the ground than most places....
Have a safe trip...
