New wannabe

HI All,

First post here.
I took a deposit on a Goldwing I had for sale tonight , supposed to finalize tommorow. So I'll be wandering in to the local Suzuki dealer in a couple of days. To buy a 650 have not yet decided on a colour, not even sure yet what is available for 08.
I've been lurking around your forum for a short while and I need to learn a new language obviously.
What the heck are you talking about when you mention a " MADSTAD " ?? I gather it has something to do with a windscreen adjustment.

It isn't "Your" forum it's "Our" forum. You only have to have an interest in the V-Strom to be accepted here so welcome aboard.

A Madstad bracket is an adjustable windscreen mounting bracket. Many people have problems with wind over the stock screen and in many cases the Madstad bracket resolves those problems. Their web site is here: http://madstad.com/

The Madstad bracket is an after market windshield mounting bracket for the VStroms. In stock form, the 'Strom shield can be mounted in one of four height positions, but it still needs help. The Madstad allows the shield to sit out a bit farther from the fairing, to allow some air to come up from below the shield to kill the vacuum that is created behind the stocker. That air vacuum creates buffeting on your head/helmet.

The Madstad is adjustable not only for height, but for forward/backward tip, so you can really dial in the right adjustment for your needs.

Some find the bracket is all that is needed to make the stock shield tolerable. Some, like me, even go with an after market windshield (mine is a Givi) along with the Madstad for best results.

Give the stock shield a try before spending money, the stock shield adjusted for height might do the trick for you.

Ok guy's thanks for the education, now we start to get to the harder questions.
1. I'll be going with the 650 and will be running it on the highway and two lanes mostly. I will ride it some on dirt, gravel and the occasional fire road if the mood strikes. I'm 5' 8" with a 28 " inseam, so It looks like a set of lowering links are in the cards. I have been riding a long time and am a retired road racer from way back so my skills are pretty good for an old guy. My other bike is an 05 Triumph Bonneville T100.

2. What recommendations for things should I just order from the dealer when I order the bike ? eg: center stand, hand guards, crash bars, hard luggage , I will be doing a long trip on the bike shortly and want the best stuff I can afford.

3. The bike will be ridden two up occasionaly so pillion farkles will be a big factor when adding stuff to the bike. When SWMBO is happy, we are happy.

4. All suggestions and recommendations are appreciated.

It is hard to say what YOU should order for the bike. Ever one has different needs/wants. A luggage set that I like, you may hate. As far as center stands, there are several out there. If the dealer will give you a break on one, I'd say go for it. I try to tell new owners that they need to ride the bike and see what they do and don't like. Then do some research and see what/how to change it for the better for them.
That being said, since you are not new to motorcycles, I am sure it will not take you long to figure out what you want to change.
Go to the venders section and visit there web sites, this will give you a good idea of some of the farkels that are out there.

I have my 07 Goldwing ABS for sale right now and planned on buying the DL650 once sold but the weather got nice the other day and I bought the 650 I am glad i did ...love this bike. I bought a 07 leftover mainly because I like the blue better than the 08 colors. Now to sell the wing....

New Strom Stuff

I'd wait a bit till you ride on some of that stuff too. I have 1000 with about 32 inch inseam and thought I'd have to switch to the 650 seat and lower it to ride but about 9 months 6,000 miles later I still have the stock and love it. She will "soften" a bit, and depends on how you set up your suspension too I have found, especially with two up riding. Also I usually wear a pair of steel toe Rocky boots which helps me too compared to thin soles on shoes. I don't have lots of extra cash (Three Kids at home) so I still don't have the center stand yet. Last weekend put a new tire on at home by attaching a come-along to an anchor in my garage ceiling to lift back end, worked great. But I am a farmer and I am used to doing that kind of stuff.

Good Luck, "Back in the day" I had a Gold Wing too and loved it.

I'd hold off on the lowering links. I've got a 29" inseam and bought a set of links almost immediately. However, I discovered that after a few thousand miles the bike kinda scrunched down--probably seat foam compression from my fat arse--and I could pretty much flat foot it. Never did put the links on.

My advice based on what you've described so far:
  • Go for a large top case (like the GIVI E52); you're probably used to lots of storage with the GW, and there's precious little under the seat of the 'Strom. Plus the topcases make a great backrest for the passenger. If your passenger wears a riding coat with back armor, a pad on the top case probably won't be necessary.
  • Being chain drive, frequent cleaning and maintenance is called for (~600 miles), so a centerstand is very handy. Reviews across the brands seem to be very equal.
  • Lots of us drop these things (many, like me, just maneuvering the thing around the garage or driveway), so crashbars are good insurance.
  • With the oil cooler and filter just hanging out there, many here feel a skid plate of some sort is also good insurance, especially if you'll be on roads where rocks are plentiful. There are a lot of options, with none seeming to be reviled; I personally liked the SW-Motech and AMotoStuff designs, but was too cheap, so I made my own
  • The OEM handguards do a nice job keeping the wind and road debris off the hands, and help tremendously in cooler weather. Relatively inexpensive, will probably break in a moving fall of any sort.
  • And expect to buy a replacement windshield, or at the least one of the Madstad brackets, to get back to some sort of wind protection.
