I am SO going to get filleted for this comment, but I'm going to do it anyway. Converse opinions are good, right?
I've got a Vee. These days, the gen 1 models if the 650 and 1000 are selling for around the same price point, I'd say. I've got mine running well.
At some point, I got to ride a new model KLR around the city. I also recently got to ride around a gen 1 Wee. You know what? The wee reminded me of the KLR. A faster, more revvy KLR. I know it's sacrilege to compare anything to a KLR, but there were characteristics of both that in the short time I rode them, reminded me of each other in feel and engine characteristics. It's not a bad thing, both were peachy rides.
I was looking for a 650 when I got my Vee, and even though its been a pain in the ass sometimes, it feels like much more machine than the aforementioned two, not just in the power department. I'm glad I made the choice I did when I was able to.
Back to what greywolf said:
Are the speeds it can run without effort even practical? Not really.
Do I wish I could get more than 150 miles from a tank (I'm an urban commuter)? Yep.
Do I wish my tires would last longer than 6K miles? Yep.
Do I wish my insurance cost much less than it does? Yep.
Is it AWESOME? Tee hee.
Should you get whatever stirs your soul, for whatever reason, regardless of what a bunch of well informed hooligans think? Yep. I did, and even though I'm selling my Vee for the aforementioned reasons (being poor sort of sucks!), I'm grateful I had the chance to own it.
When I'm in a better place in a while, I'll probably own another, or a Vee2.
