Webbikeworld.com has good reviews on chain lube. Ask at your favorite shop for the lube that doesn't make a big mess. Little or no cleaning is needed. Just a wipe with a dry rag or lightly moistened with any handy solvent so OK. (Dampening the rag with paint thinner or anything else is OK, submerging the chain in a strong solvent is not OK.)
You adjusted it for the correct slackness, right? A bit too loose is better than too tight. With the bike on the side stand, center of the lower run of the chain, lift & lower lightly with one finger. An inch of lift is good. 1-1/8" is better.
