When I picked up my Vee today my mechanic showed me the rear tire he had removed. There were two spots where my tire had been punctured & the ride on did exactly what it's supposed to do. It filled in those punctures & I didn't lose a bit of air pressure!
That's good info right there. I used Ride On in my last two Vees. The only flat I ever had, the Ride On failed. When I tried to plug the tire on the side of the road (mushroom plugs and gummies), I discovered the flat was caused by a one-inch gash. I couldn't stuff enough plugs in there to hold air. Not really a fair test for the Ride On. I think I'll give it another go.
I currently use Ride On and think it's been successful for me. I picked up a screw right in the middle of my rear tire and as the tires were practically new (and given the location of the plug), I decided I was going to continue to ride the tire. I normally have zero issues with plugs, but this time I had a very slight leak. I got tired to airing up every couple of weeks, so I decided to give Ride-On a try. I now find that even though I check pressure pretty regularly, I only need to add a bit of air every 3-4 months. I've never experienced tire pressure that was so stable.
Will Ride On protect me when I catch the next screw? I don't know, but I will say that I'm happy so far.
You're welcome. Whenever I buy a bike I get it to the shop as soon as I'm able to get this stuff put in.
I had a shaky front end on my Roadstar. Thought maybe it was bearings. It wasn't. Put in Ride On & that all went away. Plus, right after I put the car tire on the back of the Roadstar I got a nail in it. Pulled the nail out & it sealed right up. Never lost any pressure.
It won't do anything for sidewall punctures, but I think most of them occur in the middle of the tire typically anyway.
I originally put the ride-on in for vibration damping; it really works! I also feel I get longer life out of my tires, over 13K on the last rear. I did have a screw just outside the contact area of the ride-on which required a plug. Yes I plugged the rear tire with a mushroom type plug over 5 months ago with no issues. I also told the tire shop don't worry about balancing the tires as I was using Ride-on.
My only real complaint with Ride On is that the stuff is thick and it wasn't all that easy a transition from the bottle through the valve stem. Next time I'm going to let the bottles sit out in the sun for a couple of hours, or warm them in hot water before I begin.
I've switched to Ultraseal. No problems. A real mess when changing tires. Haven't decided to use it in the GS (TPM), but probably will at first tire change if I do it myself.
Of course, there is no substitute for a plug kit and air compressor.
That sucks. Glad you found something that works for you though.
So far Ride On has worked for me in 2 tires that I know of so I'm gonna stick with it until it fails me. I do carry a 12v compressor & plug kit now as well.
Some are reporting good experiences using Ride On. I would conclude that using it would increase safety. Less chance of loosing control of your machine in traffic if a tire quickly goes flat. Who can argue with that? Also we should inspect tires occasionally for stuff.
Which is somewhat offset by the removal of wheel balancing weights - more so on knobbies, etc.
Still, you make a good point...
