Hey guys, i havent been around for a while, but still ride the strom daily. Ive had my interests tied into an SRT-4 project, but i finally found some time to tend to the bags on my 07 650.
The bags are only about 2 years old but had begun to fade within the first season of owning them. They have since turned the typical grey/blue faded color. I finally couldnt take it any longer, so after some research, i decided to spray-bomb them with some plastic paint. I *think* some of the plastic paints have etching properties, so i figured that would have the best chance of sticking to the nylon. The paint that i chose came from the walmart and wasnt terribly expensive: Krylon Fusion for plastics.
Prep was minimal, as i didnt have time to wait for them to dry if i had washed them. Basically, i took a stiff broom and scuffed the dust off of them. The paint fogged pretty heavily, so i had to move quickly to keep it from getting a saturated, slick look. They ended up turning out pretty good, with one exception that i didnt see coming: the paint wont stick to rubber. The top handles and the nelson rigg emblem are all made from rubber and the paint simply wouldnt set up on them. It was a terribly sticky mess until I figured out where the wet paint was coming from. A few minutes with a paper towel and paint thinner had it taken care of. I ended up cutting the threads on the emblems, removing them, and repainting the sides. Not a big deal, but something i wish i had been aware of to begin with.
Its been a month now since i painted them. The bike is garaged, but it sits outside in the sun at work during the day for about 10 hours. So far, i havent noticed any additional fading, but i have noticed a few spots on the foam backing that i missed with paint. It has continued to fade in the unpainted spots, but they wont be hard to touch up. I have noticed no flaking, peeling, fading, or any other defects in the paint so far.
All in all, i definitely recommend trying this stuff if you have any soft bags that have began to fade.
Now for the best part of any post: PICS!!!!!
