Chain wax/lube vs Chain Life, and reviews

Hey folks,

Here's a fun little poll I posted on another forum, that might be of use to both new and experienced riders alike.

Wondering who's using what chain wax/lube product (yes there's tons of threads on this), but additionally, what kind of mileage you're getting out of your chains & sprockets, as well as your personal thoughts on the product you've chosen.



Can't make a multi-question poll, so here's what I'd like you guys to do:
  1. As per the poll options, indicate which wax/lube product you mostly use. If yours isn't listed, post it in a response; same goes if you've switched between different products. I'd also like to know whether you ride in all/most conditions (winter/salty roads, rain, dirt etc)
  2. Post a response with details: How frequently you lube, what (if any) cleaning product/method you use, and your personal thoughts/mini-review on said product.
  3. Post the mileage you've gotten out of your current or past chains. i.e. if a chain lasted 25k, 40k, etc before needing replacement, and how worn they were at that point. (this is the info I'm mostly looking for!)
  4. (added after initial post) What brand/kind of chain are you using? (D.I.D. VX, EK, RK, Renthal... 525/530.. etc)

My own answers -- Regarding the chain wax/lube:
  • I have used various products, but the main one for about the past 1.5-2 years has been DuPont Teflon Chain Saver. Prior to that I used Belray briefly, and Maxima Chain Wax for probably 2 years before that.
  • 2010 Ninja 250R had over 27,000km on it, pretty much entirely using Maxima Chain Wax, and the chain & sprockets were still in great condition when the bike was sold. Wax retains its waxy/lubricated feel, however, I find the Maxima wax can gunk up a lot, particularly inside the front sprocket cover.
  • Switched briefly from Maxima to Belray SuperClean Lube (the stuff that sprays on white) but felt despite its "anti-fling" claim, the stuff got all over everything and was a big pain to clean off. Switched back to Maxima for a while, until:
  • Started using the DuPont Teflon Chain-Saver product about 1.5-2 years ago, mostly due to popular recommendation. It's also nearly half the price of some of the products sold at dealerships for a similar capacity can. I find it goes on much cleaner and doesn't fling, but I have a hard time determining whether it's retaining the waxy/lubricated feeling after a few hundred KM, where other products clearly retained it.


Regarding the chain itself:

  • I ride in mostly all weather conditions; winter as long as there's not significant snow/ice on the roads, regardless of salt. Rain is no problem. I don't do much of any offroading, so the closest to dirt I get is dirt/gravel roads. Generally wax the chain every 300-500km, more frequently if I've been riding in bad conditions.
  • I've so far had to replace the chain & sprockets twice on my '05 V-Strom DL650 -- first at around 30,000KM, 2nd at the 66k KM mark (so about 36,000KM usage) -- the initial replacement was shortly after I bought the bike (had just over 23k KM on it) and the previous owner had left the bike in absolutely filthy condition, the chain especially.
  • I've cleaned & lubed it frequently since then, but will admit I've put off adjusting the chain a few too many times/for too long.
  • I am considering switching to a different chain wax product to see if chain life changes significantly -- obviously there are other factors to this, this is by no means a scientific test, but more a curiosity...
  • My new chain, installed today, is a D.I.D. Professional VX series -- so an X-Ring, 525 size.

I voted "other"

I use an automatic chain oiler (Tutoro with a Scottoiler applicator bracket and single tip) and feed my chain a 50/50 mix of 25W60 motor oil and 80W90 gear oil. That's not a "special blend" it's just stuff I have on hand.
This is on a new chain and sprockets. The chain etc that was on the bike when I got it had unknown mileage on it but were genuine parts. I don't know if it was THE original part, but the bike had about 50,000Km on it when I replaced the chain. The PO used tacky spray lube which I continued with until I put the oiler on.
My riding is 95% road and the rest is only dirt roads, not off road.

Personally I think it's the routine that gives the best results over the choice of product. Lubricating it "lightly and often" I consider better than "heavily and rarely". "Lightly and rarely" is just begging for trouble, and "heavily and often" is just going to make a nasty mess around your wheel and front sprocket. That's just my opinion of course.

99% paved road 1% unpaved. Year round, all weather.
Have used 90wt gear oil in the past. A couple of cans of wax. DuPont Teflon seems less messy, easy to use. Apply when I sense the need - approx. every other tank. Clean with kero. Get about 24k miles per chain. No idea if any of this matters much.

Home made chain oiler. ATF as the fluid.

ATF because I live near the beach and do ride dirt roads now and then, the dirt modtly flings off using ATF.

50,000'ks on the chain and rear, and really neither are badly worn. Front was changed at 30,000k's, slightly hooked.

DID 525 currently in bling gold. OEM sprockets from bikebandit, the latest set stamped Sunstar.

PJ-1 Blue Label for me....works great, and cleans off when I want it too. I used to use Super Clean....that title is an oxymoron!! It is impossible to clean that white gunk off after it's been on the chain for some time...

I have about 295,000 km or 183,000 miles on my two DL650's.

1) I use Wurth HHS 2000 (Called HHS 2K in some areas)

2) Lube with every tank of gas and after every ride in the rain. I never ever ever waste time cleaning the chain since it does absolutely nothing useful anyway and might harm the chain

3) Prior to the above routine I cleaned and lubed my first two chains on my 2006 DL650 as per the manual. This meant cleaning with Kerosene and lubing with chain oil at 1,000 km (620 miles).

First Chain (oem): 33,900 km 21,018 miles

Second Chain (DID X-RIng) 37,900 km 23,498 miles. Went bad on a trip and rode about 3,000km 2,000 miles after the chain showed the red dust of death

Third Chain (DID X-RIng): Lubed with HHS 2000 with every tank of gas and after every ride in the rain: Replaced at 74,845 km 46,404 miles. Still had life left but was heading on a long trip so decided to be safe.

Forth Chain (DID X-RIng): still on the 2006 which is sitting in my hanger. Has never been adjusted. Had at last fill-up 55,769 km or 34,577 miles. The bike is currently retired so probably won’t see much more for mileage.

On my 2012 DL650 I replaced the OEM Chain at 66,060 km or about 41,000 miles. I replaced it then (with a (DID X-RIng) because there were 2 chain events on bikes around me. My mechanic thought I was nuts since there appeared to be lots of life on it and it had never needed adjustment except when the front sprocket wore out. Prior to lubing with every tank of gas etc. I replaced sprockets when I replaced the chain the way most people advise. Once I switched to the Wurth I found that my chain and rear sprocket way outlasted the front sprocket. I have worn front sprockets to nothing between 55,200 km (34,200 miles) and 61,700 km 38250 miles. Rear sprockets I generally replace with the chain but might rethink that as they show very little wear when the chain is replaced.

4) The replacement chains were all DID X-Ring intended for street bikes. I know they changed the codes but haven't paid attention.
