Tac outta Black

So what happens when you get her into the RED, just for a sec - or longer? And does the first gen Wee have a limiter?

I've wondered the same thing.
I saw my other bike flash red when getting on the freeway. Alwas wondered about the Wee. My 1100RT was fun to bounce off the rev limiter.

This thread sounds like "Here, hold my beer and watch this" kind of thing...

Let someone else try it...

Did you try it and your engine exploded? Was there any fire?

I think i'm just too old to try stuff like this anymore. When i was 20 i would have immediately run outside to test it.

fwiw, I accidentally downshifted in to 1st gear @ 70mph with my SV650, not once, but twice, brain fart

first time I probably had 50k on the bike, I had recently switched to GP shift

I decide to sprint quickly up to a ton for the hell of it, solo ride, no traffic, as I pull away from my stop, I bring it up to redline in 1st, than push down on the shifter into second, click, bring it to redline in 2nd, here is where I had my brain fart, I put my toe under the shifer and click it back up into 1st then release the clutch, instant rear tire chatter, tachometer pointing due east (estimate 14,000rpm) but I quickly realize what has happened and pulled the clutch, when I got speeds and revs matched, I continued on, no ill effects, it was probably only at 14k a split second

second time, about 90k on my SV, I was riding with my son's (one on VFR, other on Yamaha Maxim) I was bringing up rear as we went thru a slowdown area, I was in 2nd gear, as we passed the slowdown area and got to open road, we accelerated quickly, again, I bring it up to redline in 2nd, and instead of pushing down to 3rd, I click back up into 1st, this time I was a real space cadet, I was doing everything I could to keep the bike shiny side up, why was a skidding all over the place, probably only went on for 2-3 seconds, but at the time it seemed forever, the tach was pointing due east

maybe that is what caused my valve guides to be worn at 135k

I don't know about the first generation but I was trying to outrun a Harley away from a stop sign on my 2012 650 and hit the rev limiter. His bike was so loud I couldn't hear mine at all. I was slamming through the gears and then it felt like I turned the ignition off. It took a second for me to realize what happened then I shifted up again.

I stayed in front of him the whole time

Even the first Wee, 2004, has an over-rev limiter. The ECM cuts power to the injectors when the limit is exceeded.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s
