Hiding A Spare Key

I don't lose my keys very often. But I am planning to do a couple week trip next month and I would like to hide a spare key somewhere on the bike.

I'm thinking maybe duct taping it to the inside of the fairing?

Any other suggestions?

don't lock it under the seat
LOL I was working on the battery and put my keys in the under seat compartment and after done, I put the seat on.:yikes: It took wire hanger and 45 minutes of scaping my arm and bike bits to get it out. I would just ziptie the key to the iside faring and maybe coat the key in a bit of grease to prevent rusting. When need to use it arises, simply wipe the grease with your good shirt and done.

I keep one set in the ignition and another in my pocket and another at home, but the idea of around the next sounds ilk a good idea.

I used to keep a spare key set in lockable hard luggage and a luggage key duct taped inside the fairing. Carrying two key sets, each in different pockets, is all I do now.

Since my jacket usually goes with me when I'm off the bike I have mostly kept one in a jacket pocket. But given that I"m in a transition in terms of motorcycles I like this:

I keep a spare for both the bike, and topcase in the cell-phone pocket of whatever jacket I've taken on the trip (I never leave my jacket hanging over my bike when I stop for anything - it's always with me).

If I lose the *main* key, AND the spare, I deserve to be stranded...

However, I *did* think of something else recently while getting a couple of spares made.
The spares are cheap if you use the standard ilco x241 suz18 blanks. Problem is they're not long enough to start the bike, because of the depth of the ignition well. HOWEVER, it's very simple (I've done it) to either grind or Dremel the corners off the lower left and lower right of the key "head." It will now fit into the ignition well.
All that said, I plan on hiding one *unmodified* key (that will not work the ignition, but *will* unlock the seat) somewhere accessible on the bike. Then hide a *modified* spare that *will* work in the ignition, duct-taped to the underside of a seat bracket, under the locked seat.
If you're still with me, that gives you a two step process (assuming you know where both keys are), to actually get the ignition key out from under the locked seat -- something very unlikely for someone uninformed to connect the dots.
Hopefully, going through the process to get the spare won't be a daily event... What I like about it, is you don't have to carry your spare around, and it's forgotten, until you need it...

I put all three keys (adv bike) in a waterproof container like one for 35mm film....(camping store)....and wire tied it inside the left lower side of the fairing...if I look down while seated on the bike, just to the left of the forks, there is a small cubby/shelf that it fits into just fine, I can see it but unless you are specifically looking for them, you will never find them...this message will self destruct eventually....

With regard to zipties … I have done this in the past only to find that the zip ties "dried" out and when I was looking for the key, all that was there was a piece of the zip tie.

There is a lot of conversation here but I cannot figure how to remember where I put the spare key -- after I hide it … senior moment again!

I haven't done it for the bike yet, but I have a copy of all my vehicle keys shoved in the wallet. My wallet stays in my pants.

They're all generic copies with the plastic head removed and they're like 5th generation copies. They work, but they require a bit of jiggling. For cars with transponder chips, they'll only open the door.

It's for the times I lock the keys in the car.

For the bike, I'll probably put a copy under the insole of my boots.

I rarely take my key out of the ignition, because I rarely ride where there are people, and especially not those that would steal my bike or anything off it. However, in case of loss, I keep a spare key in my jacket pocket.

Spare for the bike and luggage wire tied in the fairing area. Did not use a plastic zip tie because I may be in a spot where I don't have something to cut it with. A few twists of the wire by hand and done. I also wrapped the key bundle around the mounting location with electrical tape. Keeps it black and more hidden and also keeps them from clanking around.

Spare key in my wallet.

When I dismount on a warm day my coat gets left with the bike...with a locked cable through an arm & around the handlebars.

Good ideas

This thread made me rethink where to leave the spare key. On the 'spare key shelf' in the kitchen doesn't sound like such a good idea anymore. (at least it's in a safe place and not lost) Neither does the thought of having to call the wifey when I'm somewhere far away on a ride and she has to meet me somewhere with the key.:argue: Thanks guys and gals:thumbup:

Some times it would be cheaper to call a locksmith....my wife requires a bribe for road side assistance....who can put a price on quality time though.

This is a great thread with lots of good ideas.
