Homemade GPS mount for Roadmate GPS

I have a Magellan Roadmate GPS that I wanted to use on my V-Strom, but I wanted a more secure mount than the automobile style ones usually available for the Roadmates (a lot of those click-in plastic mounts make me nervous). The motorcycle specific ones were pricey, and I figured I could make one pretty cheap. The stem and yokes on the mount came from a no-name suction cup camera mount I found in a surplus catalog for 5 bucks. I liked this mount because it had locking rings on the upper and lower yokes that held the mount in position. I cut up the suction cup base and reformed and strengthened it with epoxy and ABS plastic. I then built a handlebar clamp out of PVC pipe, aluminum, JB Weld and epoxy putty. The GPS cradle was formed from 2mm aluminum that I had left over from a previous project. The bends in the cradle were made using a Grizzly vise mounted 4 bending brake. The project was made entirely with hand tools. The bending brake was the most sophisticated tool; everything else was done with files, coping saws and hacksaws, a drill and a scroll saw.

I made the upper cradle with a sun visor, so I could see the GPS screen better in bright sunlight. The upper cradle slides down over the GPS unit and locks it in place when you tighten the two knobs on the back. It's really secure; any bump that would knock it loose would probably dislodge me also. The mount puts the GPS right in my line of sight with the instrument cluster. It works with both my Roadmate GPS and with a Samsung Galaxy phone. Vibration is very minimal when riding. I bought several of those camera mounts, and the support stems will be great in the future for adapting into something like a GoPro mount which will use the same handlebar clamp.

If you want to see more photos and adapt the design for your own use, feel free; here is a link to the photo album with more pictures: https://www.stromtrooper.com/members/...dmate-gps.html

There are still faint glimmers of civilization left in this barbaric slaughterhouse that was once known as humanity... Most of them ride V-Stroms.

Yes, beautiful work, but WOW!... major overkill. This one is cheap, works well and is waterproof to boot.

LOL MikeB, I have one of those. It's one of those cheap mounts I mentioned. Four plastic tabs on the back of the case that lock into the mount. One of the tabs broke off when I was removing the case from the mount shortly after I bought it. Calling it waterproof is a pretty optimistic claim by the manufacturer also.
