2 Motorcycles Head-On in Colorado

Last year I posted "Riding Over Your Head" in Riding Proficiency. I was new to riding and was riding with experienced Big Bike BMW friends on famous Highway 14 from Walden, CO to Fort Collins, CO. I was having trouble keeping up and noted a young guy on a Duke that was absolutely flying through the twisties, just fearless and reckless. In the post I mentioned that later in the ride he was standing next to the road smiling and talking to a Larimer County Deputy, his lights flashing and he too was smiling like they were friends.

Well, below is a local news spot about two riders killed after the Ducati crossed the center line. The age, 28, is about right, and the Duke was red, but probably 90% are. Horsetooth Reservoir is close to Highway 14.

The riding season is just getting underway in many places, and after a long winter layover, we can get rusty. Too many folks forget that there's a "warm up" period and hit it hot and heavy, and their skill are a bit stale. This is an unfortunate thing, but it does serve to remind us all to break in gradually after winter is over and get the skills honed up before letting it all hang out. Be safe, guys.

Bummer. Folks want to ride like the wind and don't do it on the track.
Condolences to the families.

Like most of us, I used to like to push the envelope a bit. A lot. Over time, and as my riding skills increased and I gained experience (matured?) I realized that I could enjoy riding just as much doing it sanely than insanely. Never did a track day, though. Eventually, I developed the attitude of, "it's better to see how fast I can go around a curve well, rather than how well I can go around a curve well." I've tried the latter method and scared the dickens out of myself a few times.

Definitely coming into that time of the year. I've heard of 3 rider deaths in my general area in the last week, 2 were from left turning vehicles. Be careful out there.

Rob

Ride every day, it's good for you.
