The data is murky at best, but it may be that the 2002-03 Vees don't melt their stators or suffer from wandering rotor magnets quite as often as the later models.
But honestly, what difference would an occasional theoretical 50 watts make in your life?
One worthwhile upgrade would be the regulator/rectifier. A MOSFET or series R/R will give you much steadier voltage levels at lower RPM than the stock unit and wastes less energy.
