Should I be upset or flattered..

As most of you know I have a blog going about mine and my brothers Gen 2 DL650's.

I have gone to some work to put up quality pictures of the accessories and imagine my surprise when I have discovered some of these images being used on websites selling the same accessories.

GIVI Crash Bars

GIVI Bash Plate

Part of me thinks " they have stolen my pics" the other part of me thinks " Wow those pics look really good being used like that"

Have any other members discovered pics of your bikes being used to sell products or used in other ways?

no big deal

the web site authors probably did a Google Image search for photos of Givi DL650 etc etc. Since your photos are not copyrighted, your photos were used (and BTW - nice blog site).

Current Bike: 2007 ABS Wee, rebuilt forks with Cogent DDC, Elka rear shock, tapered roller steering stem bearings, fork brace, Admore top box lights, LED side-only turn indicator lights, Powerlet outlet, frame sliders, Givi windscreen, Givi top box.

Prior Bikes: 2003 EX250, 2007 DL650 (non-ABS)

I'd be flattered, and if I were the type to think otherwise I probably wouldn't put the picture online.

VERY nice pics btw- very professional. Do you ever plan to ride the bike? (So clean!)

Not so. By law ALL work is copyright with or without a watermark.

I used to sell some motorcycle memorabilia on eBay and took some pictures that were copied and used in other auctions. This was 15 years ago, and to this day I can still go on there and do a search and find my pictures. It's not flattering, it pisses me off!!!

You should notify those part makers and say for some free farkles, they will get free quality advertising. Otherwise, have an attorney send a letter. It might work and you'll get free parts!

That part of you is correct. It's no surprise that one of the "borrowing" entities is Chinese. Their poor reputation in such matters is earned. As for the Portuguese parts seller, perhaps they don't believe that the photographer will ever come calling.

Despite suggested copyright protections for such things, once something is uploaded to the web, it is or can eventually be made accessible to the entire world.

I had some pictures of my Red 06" show up on a few Vendors' sites. I guess we should be flattered that they thought the pictures showed off their wares well enough to represent their products on line.

Looking at Twisted Throttles site for Givi stuff on a Bandit, my forum web shots show up of my '07 Red 1250 Bandit, and they didn't ask. I called, they apologized, then gave me credit for the shots! Funny.....

I remember a guy (call him "Joe") who had a website with lots of nice images on it. Forum people often added one of Joe's images to their sig lines via a link to the image on Joe's site. So, anytime anyone read a post they made, Joe's server would have to serve up that pic in their sig line, using up Joe's bandwidth. Joe's site was plastered with messages about the legalities, and pleaded with people to stop stealing his bandwidth.

Eventually, Joe fought back. When his statistics showed a particular image was being downloaded a lot, he'd follow the links out and discover the mis-use. Then he would replace the image on his site with a gay porn image.

For a time on the forum, scrolling thru a thread you'd see images flicking by something like: Chevy 1500, Chevy logo, Chevy 1500, Chevy 2500, Monster truck, Chevy logo, GIANT PHALLUS, Chevy 1500 etc, GIANT PHALLUS, then a bunch of "WTF??!!" posts about the giant phallus... Trust me, it's for more jarring to see than to read about it.

Hilarity ensued. Eventually I think people got the point, but interestingly, they were usually mad at Joe. Kind of like suing someone for getting hurt in their house while robbing it.
