The value of a walkaround - looking but not seeing

I just came back from a BC trip where I methodically checked my bike over each day -chain, tires, loose bolts etc. Haven't ridden for about a week so yesterday , cleaned the bike up and was going to take it out for a coffee. In doing so I noticed my right front brake hose retainer bolt and speed nut were missing. How long, I don't know.

A trip to Home depot and a 6mmx45 HH bolt later, I'm back in business. However, does remind me of something my father, a mechanic once told me - looking at something doesn't mean you're seeing it. I may not have missed this at all or missed it several days in a row. I used to kid him about talking to himself while he was working - he used to say that was his way of making sure he knew what he was supposed to be doing or looking for. I guess it's also true that the only sure way to tell if it's loose is to wrench it. I'll have to give him yet another posthumous "tip of the hat"

Not the worst part to have come loose perhaps but I'll certainly be more vigilant about these kinds of things in the future.

Safe riding,

Bob

Anyone who does technical or assembly work tends to talk to themself. Every tech I have worked with does. Your dad does sound like a cool guy.

It's not just the small stuff either. On previous bikes I've had a missing front axle nut at the 600 mile service and a missing swingarm nut in the middle of the desert!

I would be willing to be the big stuff is more likely to be overlooked. You automatically assume that this stuff will stay put. Obviously not the case!
